Default Potter books are all hype

Retired business editor Jack Markowitz of the Tribune Review has labelled the Harry Potter novels as "the most over-praised, over-publicized and marketed books ever printed."

Quote:
"They report the release dates and hours -- typically midnight --at which "the latest" will go on sale. It is the kind of advertising that money can't buy. Just try to get such attention for a truly worthy cause."
He obviously hasn`t heard of all the good the Harry Potter 'publicity' has done for the world. Those Czech children locked in caged beds, sufferers of MS, the homeless, the sick & the needy have all been helped by the 'publicity' and 'hype' of J.K.Rowling.

Quote:
"When was the last time you heard actual word-of-mouth praise for a Potter book, as opposed to publicity? Or read one yourself (parents are allowed)?"
I wouldn`t be so quick to call praise from the likes of Stephen King, publicity motivated. And there is plenty of word-of-mouth praise.

Back in 1997 when Harry Potter wasn`t the franchise it is now, it gained its popularity through the word-of-mouth. In the beginning, Jo Rowling was just a small time writer trying to make the best of the gift she had. The internet wasn`t even a frequently avaliable tool then either.

Admittedly, alot of publicity is used now for Harry Potter, much in relation to the franchise of films, but that wasn`t how it became popular initially.

I for one, can also say I know many an adult, who I've introduced to the series by word-of-mouth, who`ve gone on to love and in some cases, even steal my copies of the books for weeks on end. Just because it was removed from the New York Bestsellers list and ranked on a children's list instead, doesn`t make it a child only zone.

I think someone needs to point out to him, that it`s been seven years, in which time ALOT of HP fans have become or are well on their way to becoming, adults.

In case you're wondering, this is the critic's email address: jmarkowitz@tribweb.com

Play nice children (heh) - show that maturity and freedom of thought that I know you all posess.

I think I might have never read Potters without word-of-mouth praise by several sensible adults. I think at least three of my friends had been reading Potters before I did. Now Iīm a bigger fan than any of them! And I didnīt have prejudices because it was a "childrens book" (I love for example "Alice in Wonderland" and stories like that), more it was that hype and popularity which made me think it might not be good.

Have to admit that I was planning to take a look at the books once Rowling would have written them all, just in case I would like them. But I made the mistake, and here I am waiting for the sixth book instead of being completely unaware about the wizarding worlds accidents, lol! Accio July!

With books popularity doesnīt necessarily mean they would be bad, even though there would be all that hype and advertising. I mean, Lord of the Rings is popular and itīs also great. Not a good example, I guess, written so many years ago, but...

FEE FII FOOO FONA!

I could never get into the books until I got to college, evenafter I rather enjoyed the films. Then several of my mates who read the books, convinced me to read them. Now I'm more addicted than them. I dragged them all to see PoA at least once, and regularly scare them by talking obsessivly about the books.

HP may have gotten more publicity due to the films, but imo they deserved it anyway. They are wonderful books, telling a simple and old age story of good and evil. That they seem complicated is a testement to the solid and vivid background which JK has created.

I call sour grapes on this one.

That critic dude is seriously messed up. There is so much word of mouth praise of the HP books. Wow. I am a bit mad at that. He probably hasn't ever even read the HP books.

This guy surely speaks from ignorance! Just because he could never write anything that could cause such 'mania' with fans. JKR has true talent, a peculiar 'quirky' way of saying (writing)
things that captures the reader and sends them into a wonderful 'fantasy' world. People with great imaginations can enter a place where they can leave their 'real' worlds behind for a short time and transport themselves to a place you could compare to 'Oz' or 'Narnia'. Not many writers are this gifted. And, I absolutely 'love' her humor! Her interviews are great too! I think this guy may be a little green with envy!!

Probably!

Narnia... I remember trying to get there through my motherīs fur-coats in the wardrobe. Have been thinking of re-reading the whole series.

Last time I hear actual word-of-mouth praise for a Potter book? I think it was yesterday... but I can't be sure... and it was actually my cousin and me talking about the books (both of us fans).

Read one myself? I'm Currently working on POA. Just re-read COS and PS. so

Changed my mind. A very good example. LotR-fans were writing to Tolkien himself like "Where is the third book?" even though it took only about a year to publish the third one after the second... Ok, a relatively long time considering he had already written it (but wanted to give his readers some extra treats, unfortunately didnīt quite succeed), but I think our little J.K.R. is very lucky, since we donīt have to disturb her writing by sending her some stupid questions; we can discuss these things among ourselves in the internet... Maybe that Markowitz was one of those fans writing letters to Tolkien, and he now envies both us and Rowling for internet? Modern times are not so bad, after all

Glad if you e-mailed that ... person, and told him something about word-of-mouth praise... Maybe he will get wise and read the books himself before saying any more absurd things. I, however, think it would be a waste of time to personally write to a ... Oh, I cannot find a suitable word! Empty-head? To write to an empty-head like that. But it is good if somebody does. Go, Snivellus, go!
