| | |  Potter Actors Receive Their OBE's
Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge), have received the very prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) award from the Queen. Quote:
Both Coltrane and Staunton - shortly to appear together in the fifth instalment of the Harry Potter franchise - played down the achievements that brought them their honours.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry established on 4 June 1917 by George V. Basically, it's now given to people who represent the Empire in a nice way, I think. (Like, outstanding achievement in international circles like arts, sport, philanthropy, diplomacy, etc). If I am correct, these two are now Sir Robbie Coltrane and Dame Imelda Staunton.
For the US, imagine getting a medal and dinner at the White House with the President, maybe.

Well done to them both, they deserve it!
As I live in the UK, because you have been awarded with an OBE does not mean you become sir or dame. To have such a title is a completely different ceremony (it's only usually awarded to people who have done really great things eg kelly holmes winning 2 gold medals at the olympics). An OBE is basically a medal awarded to you by the queen for outstanding services to the british empire. Just thought I'd correct this before people started calling them Sir hagrid or Dame umbridge!
