Post The Pope outsells Potter in Poland

The late pope John Paul's last book ('Conversations at the Dawn of a Millennium') has become the all-time bestseller in his native Poland, eclipsing the previous record-holder 'Order of the Phoenix', according to Entertainment Canada.

"The initial print run of 600,000 copies of the pope's fifth and final book, 'Memory and Identity' has sold out and publisher Znak said it has an order for another 500,000 copies.

Even just counting initial copies sold, the pope's book has beaten out the fifth instalment of the popular Harry Potter series, which has sold 460,000 copies. Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code is in third place with 450,000 copies sold."

Well, I'm from Poland too and I must say that I expected it. The Pope was a great person, he was also very talented. You know that he used to be an actor? Yeah, and except that he was a poet. He wrote some lyrics and books. I haven't read them yet, but I think I will.

And please don't think that here in Poland we don't like Harry Potter as much as you. Of course not everybody likes it. But it very popular thing, we have lots of sites, fan fics, because here's many Potter fans! But the Pope is something other. He's a kind of legend, the most important person etc for almost everyone. So it is not really a surprise.

I don't know whether HBP will be #1, but I'm sure it will be one of the bestsellers too

yes, acutaly. I had read it in the paper. Kind of amusing to me!!

I think the Pope and Harry Potter are two extremes though. you can't really compare the two...

seeing as some catholics/christians think that harry potter is "devils teachings" its not very surprising that THE POPE out sells the book. Plus.. its the pope!!

John Paul II's books have sold very well in the past, and some more people may read them now that there will be no more new ones written by him. But I don't think that most of the people reading Harry Potter will be the same ones interested in the Pope's books (at least not until some of them get a little older). (No disrespect meant - I'm one of those many over-50 HP fans.)
As someone said previously, it really is comparing apples and oranges; the Pope's books are not meant primarily as entertainment, but spiritual enlightenment; Harry Potter is written as fiction, but with a wealth of life-lessons and inspiration contained therein.
Aren't we fortunate that we can read either or both, as we choose? And isn't it wonderful how Harry Potter appeals to people in so many different countries and cultures?

All very good points! However, its a possibility that HP will catch up in the long run!!

The Pope has led such an amazing life, mind you. If it had been a fictional account, I suspect there are critics out there who would have sneered "Oh yes, so some Polish boy caught up in World War 2 just so happens to survive and becomes the third pope in a year? Oh surely not!" So I think that on interest merit alone, the Pope's story deserves that top spot because it's an incredible story made all the more amazing by the the fact it's real.
I really hope the books sells as well as in other countries. I may not have agreed with everything the Pope said, but he was a courageous and brave man.

Default da vinci code and harry potter

well it is no surprise that the popes book as sold so much, however I did see that someone pointed out that HP was the only fiction book of the three. This is not completely true. Da Vinci code is based on real events in history but it is indeed fiction. I just think that HP out sold it because people know it to be a better book.
