LOS ANGELES - Harry Potter and Shrek dominated the overseas box office once again last weekend.
Bolstered by a $17.5 million opening in Japan, and strong holdovers in key markets around the world, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban commandeered a weekend total of $40.2 million to lift its international haul to $321.2 million.
But as Shrek 2 added dates to its staggered release pattern and held strong in follow-up weeks, the DreamWorks animated cartoon blasted its way to an estimated $42.7 million weekend, lifting the international haul to $90.1 million.
Shrek 2's weekend included $10.2 million in previews in Britain. A five-day opening in France vaulted the ogre over Azkaban to the No. 1 position with $9.9 million. Other weekend debuts saw Shrek 2 pick up $1.6 million in Belgium, $912,284 in Switzerland and $1 million in South Africa. After 11 days in Australia, it has collected $18 million, while Mexico has $18 million after 12 days.
Azkaban's opening in Japan represented the third-biggest opening ever in the market after two other Warner Bros. releases, The Matrix Reloaded and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Azkaban, No. 1 in the United Kingdom for four weekends, has taken in a mighty $72.7 million to date; four weekends in France has contributed $32.4 million, four in Germany $39.4 million and three in Australia $16.9 million. |
