POA gets a standing ovation - Summary:
Kids loved it in the USA Article:
Thanks to Wizardnews Quote: It was scary to some children, somewhat confusing to the uninitiated.
But when the credits rolled on "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" after the move's local debut Thursday, the audience offered a standing ovation.
Many said it was the best yet in the popular movie series, based on the best-selling children's books about a British wizard-in-training.
"Whoever wrote this show knows how to write it," said Roger Helmer of Kalamazoo. "There was nothing dull about this show. It kept you on the edge of your seat."
He hadn't yet read the books, he said, "but I'm going to get one now."
The movie's official opening is today. But special-invitational previews at 7 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday at United Artists Crossroads Theatre in Portage nearly packed two theaters, and Kalamazoo 10 planned 12:01 a.m. shows on three screens.
As of 11 p.m. Thursday, two of the midnight shows had sold out and the third looked poised to do so as well.
Fans started lining up as early as 9:45 p.m. to ensure good seats for the 12:01 a.m. shows, and the mood in the theater lobby was festive and talkative. "This huge group of people all dressed up in capes just came in," theater manager-in-training Kevin Bolle said over the din.
While 12:01 a.m. movie-goers tend to be die-hards and well-versed in the movie's lore, the invitational preview at Crossroads saw mostly families, who had varying degrees of experience with the "Potter" universe.
The show was a bit scary for younger children.
"A child behind me said she was shivering from being scared" by the Dementors, wraith-like spooks who can suck away a soul with a kiss, said Sarah Martin of Kalamazoo.
It makes sense that the Potter movies are getting darker, she said, because "the thing about the books is, the characters age as the readers age in the process," so they stumble upon more mature problems.
The group with Helmer agreed the movie was very "action packed." "And I'm not even a Harry Potter fan," said Keith Jordan. M Live |
