Prisoner of Azkaban, the third Harry Potter film, hasn't quite managed to achieve the same amount of profits as Chamber of Secrets, on it's 44th day. Article: PoA falls behind Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban fell behind it's predecessor, Chamber of Secrets, on it's 44th day. Azkaban has made $237.4 million (£128.2m) domestically, while Chamber of Secrets had made $238.2 million (£128.6m) at this time. In all fairness CoS had a massive synchronised global opening, which meant a lot more hype produce about the movie. But still the phase 'You can't beat em, join em' has never been more appropriate. And overall $200 million for a movie is massive!

| Keeper of Mr Tennant's specs it is still in the top 5 here. and it is still selling out as well.
i wonder why it hasnt done so well in the USA.
i htink that now all of the UK's schools are on Holliday they will do a big promo push.
another thing is that PS and COS opened in America on Thanksgiving weekend mabey that is thereason it hast nt taken as much money?

i'm not surprised that it went out of theaters so soon. it wasn't anything close to as good as i thought it would be. they rushed through the beginning WAY too fast, and cut out some of my favorite scenes. |

I'm not sure why it didn't do as well as CoS in the USA. I know I loved it myself. I thought it was better than CoS even though I loved CoS and SS. In all fairness though for CoS and SS the authorities that be knew younger kids would be the main audiance to push for. However, now there is a transition from younger kids to older kids and teens, and I think it took a while for teens (boys mainly) to realize that this was a darker and more complicated film and could entice a more mature audiance.
I'm afraid the younger kids, even though they liked it, were probably having trouble with the time turner and the dialog between Lupin and Harry. So it took a while for the audiance to adjust and realize this was a different film than the first two, not that it wasn't good ITS GREAT!!! I think it did very well especially seeing how it is a transition film. Lets face it people in general do not like change, and it takes a while to adapt. The kids are not cartoons, they will evolve as does the story, which is a wonderful thing and is what makes me (an adult) love the HP world so much. I hope everyone will have accepted this by the time GoF is released. Especially since there is a death in that one and not of a (monster/ bad guy) but of a good kid. Wonder if this will give it a PG-13 rating, it shouldn't but who knows.

I watched COS again the other day and I must admit, I found it so much more fluent than POA, as POA is a little choppy but I still love the movie and I want to go and see it again. But like Karen said, the kids have broken up now from school for their summer holidays so there may be another surge before it leaves the cinema's.

i also think that the release of so many big summer movies has an effect on the third movie.. spiderman 2, white chicks, farenheit 911, etc.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ottery St. Catchpole Third Year | Paris & Kellybear r luv :Read Otty 's fics:Gone With the Wind:I♥Rupert PoA is definately more mature, I think I can understand why some people didn't like it as much as CoS which is good too. But I liked it better, it was darker, grittier and a little more real to me. Which is why I loved it so much, the whole element of it being real and not just a fantasy which is more apparent in the first two movies I think because they're so much more innocent. All those other summer blockbusters are what knocked it off the top, I always thought it was dumb they released it in the summer, but then LotR was always coming out a month later and stealing HP's fire too. The Dvd sales will tell all I guess. :sorcerer:

I agree Karen, plus PoA was released on a Bank Holiday Monday over here so maybe that's why it did so well! It's still good though $200 million! *faints* and there's still some more weeks to go and all the DVD sales! :sorcerer:

POA was a good movie, though it wasn't as good as CoS and PS (considering the third book is my favourite book) it just wasnt as great as I thought it would be, but it was good. But still, it did do a good job at raking in a lot of money, and it's not too far behind CoS. *cant wait for the dvd*

I'm not the slightest bit surprised that PS and CoS did so much better than PoA-at least in the U.S. For reason already sated many times on the forum, I do not feel that PoA came up to par at all. I loved PS and CoS was my favorite. Again, no offense

The timing is a very likely factor in the profit reduction, though I think it was best since LotR RoK was hitting theaters so soon afterward. It would have killed so many HP possibilities. That's not to degrade the earnings that it has made, because I still hold to the opinion that PoA has done exceptionally well considering the switch with the director and the threat of such drastic changes influencing the public's general appeal to it. Although, I think it could have been a better movie, it hasn't stopped me from going to see it repeatedly. lol HP rocks! |

I think Chamber of Secrets was better than Prisoner of Azkaban but thats my opinion. The reason i didn't like it was because the look of the PoA and the fact that they left alot out of the Movie that was in the book that i liked.

I would have liked POA better if it would have been done better. Because of this I did enjoy COS better.
