Permission to perform Potter banned - Summary:
JK has said no to a group of ballet students wanting to perform a Harry Potter based theme. Article:
Thanks to TLC Quote: LONDON (AP) - There'll be no wave of the magic Harry Potter wand for the 3-year-old students of a ballet school in southern England.
Choreographer Valerie Le Serve said Monday she was forced to change a 10-minute segment based on the adventures of the boy wizard and his friends after author J.K. Rowling's agent pointed out a contract with movie giant Warner Bros. that bans rival productions.
Le Serve said she wrote to Rowling's London-based agent, Christopher Little, as a courtesy and was surprised to receive a letter banning her from going ahead with the amateur event in Worthing, West Sussex.
Warner Bros., which produces the hit "Harry Potter" movies based on the books, has rights over any live theatrical or musical production until 2007.
"Sadly the position is that contractually we are precluded from granting the type of rights requested by the Worthing dance school unless Warner Bros. relent and waive their rights," said Neil Blair, a spokesman for Little. "It is simply not possible for us to pick and choose however worthy the cause, which in this particular case was clearly most worthy."
Le Serve's production was scheduled as part of a variety show in November to raise money for London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for children and the Cleft Lip and Palate Association.
Le Serve said she would adapt the costumes of black cats, owls and wand-carrying street traders to another story line.
"I could not believe it. Friends said J.K. and her agents would not mind, but it appears they do," she said. "I am flattered that they consider us to be such a great threat to their plans in 2007." | TLC |

| ooh that’s a horrible shame. How are 3 year olds in pink tutus going to jeopardise anything to do with the Harry Potter contract? ooh and its for charity
Though I guess at the same time if one ballet school/ theatre company/ drama college can do it what’s to stop another...and another...etc.
Still its a shame. I lives really close to Worthing- it would have been a nice thing to go and see :/ |

| That's Ridiculous!!!!!!!! It's one of the most stupidist things I've ever heard. Those poor children must be heartbroken. It doesn't come off good for for J.K.R. does it? |

| That is so sad, it is just a ballet skit that only the mims and dads are gonna film. Well, maybe JKR is just protective of Hp stuff. But still, they are kids that like hp just wanting to do a skit  |

| Not that I'm all for it or anything, but I guess I can see their point in doing what they did... Because if they lit them do this performance, then another group would want to do a different performance, and so on and so on, and it would just keep on growing into a bigger and bigger problem. *sigh* Such is life, I suppose. But it is a shame... |

| Well, there's nothing that JK could do anyway, the person that planned the dance would have to get in touch with the WB and ask... it doesn't say if they've done that... but WB might decided to let this go because it would make them look good, caring, etc. if they gave conditional rights to the kids to do the HP thing. |

| One thing is to do a production to make money off of it. I don't understand how they can ban a childrens school preformance and not ban other activities that are being formed (in order to make money) and that is ok. I am always reading news about this place and that place had a Harry Potter exhibit or get together. Why can they do that to make money and the little kiddies can't do a performance? |

| The Ban has to do with the performance of Harry Potter... You could have a HP themed party/whatever but you can't put on a HP play. WB owns all performance rights to HP until 2007. Period. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Marcella Riddle Graduated | This doesn't look good for JK, but it isn't her putting her foot down. It was WB. Not her.
If it was down to her, she probably would've agreed to it, she's all for charity. Seems WB aren't.
Boo to them!

A contract however is not a thing to be broken, and like some of you have said, if one ballet school interprets an Harry Potter theme, everyone will be getting on the band wagon, and that would just be way too much as far as I'm concerned. |

| It was JK agent who said that they couldnt do it.
u cant just decise to do like HP or LOTR shhows or skits without there prmision. if they let one group do it then thd have to let others do it.
it is like music. if u want to cover a song u have to get permision and the writer or performer can say no same thing nothing to do with charity |

If it was just down to him and JK then I dont see why they'd say no.
The article I read said it was WB, that was in my local paper, which is different to this. So different people are reporting different things. So who's to know what to believe. Quote: | Sadly the position is that contractually we are precluded from granting the type of rights requested by the Worthing dance school unless Warner Bros. relent and waive their rights,\" | That quote refers to WB being relentless. I know they own the rights, but really, I think it should be solely down to JK, it's her world after all. All they did was buy into it. |
