Post Order of the Phoenix aids British international sales

The Evening Standard reports that Order of the Phoenix was one of the films, in 2007, that aided the success of British films internationally, making it the industry's best ever year, with a massive £1.65 billion profit.

In a report published by the UK Film Council it was revealed that 700 million people worldwide bought tickets to see British films in 2007 - twice as many as in 2006. British movies also counted for a third of all films seen in the U.K., with Harry Potter 5 being the most successful, earning £49 million.

Quote:
John Woodward, chief executive officer of the UK Film Council said: "These statistics show that in the UK we make films in every genre from comedy to fantasy to thrillers and British films took more than $3.3 billion across the globe last year. The real success story of UK film is that we not only make big budget films like Harry Potter but we also make hugely successful smaller indie films such as Control and This is England.

"Last year we had a great crop of British films and a good year at the box office and the two are connected because the British public buy more tickets when there are more home grown films. We've got more to look forward to this year with a Bond and a Potter, as well as Brideshead Revisited, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People and Keira Knightley as the The Duchess all due in cinemas soon."

But he warned: "The future is not without challenges; winning film investment is going to be tougher with the fall out from the US writers' strike."

the fallout with the writers strike will affect movie crops slated for 2009, as it will do in the US market, but if the UK industry has enough home grown films to sustain it for just that year it would be all roses again come 2010 onwards. (hopefully of course)

MeeeeYOWZUH!

there appears to be some level of justification (from the UK Film Council) for the amount of public money pumped into the Arts in the UK?

All the same only the UK film industry (with the backing of WB of course) could have created something like the HP phenomenon!!

It also affects films this year; e.g. Half-Blood Prince. That script was completed in time but due to the strike Steve Kloves was not allowed to do re-writes, which are usually done throughout shooting, apparently. It was also why he had to wait before starting on Deathly Hallows.

Mind you, there are some blessings. Steven Moffat was on board to write 2 Tintin films, but because of the strike could not finish the second and so chose to become showrunner for Doctor Who instead. Hurrah! BBC > Hollywood

Yeah, though there should be more. They really don't get all that much, in terms of tax breaks, especially in and around London. That's why production teams like to shoot in Eastern Europe, Ireland and New Zealand.

Unfortunately yes!

I'm no filmmaker but how could any film cover everything in GOF, HBP & DH? I'm still not convinced that the 2 DH movies will satisfactorily tie up all the various story lines considering the mess made by Mr Kloves, etc but I'll still be one of the first in line to see them when they come out.

Yeah, I mean what about Dobby , SPEW (for the kiss..), Bill? And do you know id there was a locket in OotP? And so many more things they didn't have...
But I think HBP is going to be better (even though they are probably not going to have the funeral scene.. ).
Why is there nothing on the site about the 1 year aniversary of DH??????

well the films slated for 2008 arent affected too badly. most of the scripts were completed before the strike happened and if there were any rewrites that needs to be done they could be done during main production, pick ups and/or ADR, well after the strike ended. what the strike affected though, were films in development. i know that a whole crop of superhero films from WB that fell victim to this: the Justice League movie is dead because of that, as well as other startup films for Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern; and the Superman sequel got even dodgierer. so if you noticed, there arent any popular superhero related films from WB in 2009. in fact there were early rumors that WB might push to have HP: DH1 come out in 2009 just to save their year, but that would screw with everyone's schedule, forcing cast and crew to keep filming as soon as HBP was done. obviously that never materialized.

WB then moved a few films for 2008 and pushed them for a 2009 release, such as Watchmen and Terminator: Salvation. they're hoping to repeat the success of 300 with another little know comic book story in Watchmen and a windfall with Christian Bale's star power and an old franchise name in Terminator. hopefully it will work, at least for Bale's sake

seriously? hmm.... well maybe not "on record", they could course it through the director or other people involved. i know they did something similar to this with The Incredible Hulk, coursing the rewrites through the director and through Edward Norton-- who also had writing duties in the film. so if they really want/ need a rewrite, and they care more about the film than their wallets, then the right thing will get done

Yup, though technically I shouldn't be talking about it yet, It would have been possible so long as the person involved wasn't a member of the Writer's Guild of America. As lucrative as the industry it is, writers are not given their fair dues, considering there would be no stories without them.

oh yes indeed. thats why even if this strike killed a number of movies and tv shows i was looking forward to *sniff* i was in full support of the Writers Strike. heck if they can pay $25M to an actor who doesnt really deserve it, i dont see any reason why writers shoudnt get better compensation and credit for their work.
