Post Nick Dudman talks Fenrir Greyback to Make-Up Artist magazine

Make-Up Artist magazine has a web-exclusive interview with Nick Dudman, creature effects supervisor and special makeup designer for Half-Blood Prince, who talks about the exact art of creating Fenrir Greyback's look.

Quote:
“He’s a character with a great deal of fine hair all over him,” Dudman explained. “In the old days, if you were doing a werewolf, you would just lay loose hair on an actor, but nowadays the camera would pick that up, plus it’s such a coarse technique, it would be different every day.

“What we’ve done is punch fine goat hair into the pieces and pre-paint them, so when we apply the make-up, it won’t take as long. Because the hair has been punched, there’s no glue, so the movement will be freer. The reason we use fur is because it’s tapered and very fine. If you use human hair, yak or any other hair, because it’s been cut, it’s the same length at both ends and has a coarser flavor, whereas fur sits nicely close to the skin.

“The reason we’ve designed the make-up in seven pieces, including the ears, is that if it was just two pieces, maneuvering the silicone into position and gluing it accurately would become very difficult, so you choose sizes that you can manipulate and to allow a time frame that makes the make-up practical.”

With so much work going into Greyback, Dudman is justifiably pleased with the way the character has turned out. “I think he’s the prosthetic showcase for us on this film,” he said. “Plus it will give us some practice for the next one!”

He was so scary as Greyback. And the amount of detail that went into making him look that freaky in that movie is crazy. Props to Nick for sitting in that chair for 5 hours everyday.

His eyes really scared the crap out of me. He's going to have to undergo this process alot more for Deathly Hallows because his character is in that film more than he's in HBP.

I am always amazed at how much actors have to go through to entertain us for a couple of hours... specially in cases like this when, put together, the actor's on screen time doesn't add up to 10 min!

One thing I love of these productions is the fact that they take so much care in details even for the smallest amount of screen time in a character.

They did a wonderful job with the make-up. My sister and I commented on the fact that we felt a little dirty thinking he was kinda hot.

Wow, that guy was seriously "real" looking...He gave a great performance, too. Can't wait to see him in Deathly Hallows

I know. While we hardly seen him at all, I bet he took the most work out of all the actors. It was well worth it, though...because he looked very realistic!

Reading this reminded me of 13 Ghosts for some reason. (Love that movie, btw!)

We need more behind the scenes shows from the Potter movies.

it's weird to think all that thought goes in to a charcter and without it the movie would stink

Greyback was great! Just how I imagined him- disgusting and dangerous! It's funny to think he was covered in goat hair though.
