 Newspaper apologizes to JKR for Gilderoy Story - Paper apologises for getting story wrong Summary:
The Sunday Mail in the UK apologised today for publishing an article on August 22 headlined "JK: My revenge" Article:
The Sunday Mail newspaper published an apology to JK Rowling for an article they published on August 22nd 2004. In the article the Sunday Mail claimed that JK had based the character of Gilderoy Lockhart on her ex-husband, George Arantes. Quote: ON August 22 we published an article headlined 'JK: My revenge' in which we mistakenly stated that JK Rowling had revealed that she had based her Harry Potter character Gilderoy Lockhart on her ex-husband Jorge Arantes.
Subsequently, we were contacted by Ms Rowling's solicitors and, as a result, we are happy to accept that she made no such revelation and that the character is not based on Mr Arantes in any way. We apologise for any embarrassment caused.

But where did they get the idea in the first place? I'm glad they apologised JK might've wanted to keep it private on how she went to court about him. I mean it's not in her biography on the site so why did they include it?

It's good that they appologized to her for bad publishing. I personally think it's true, but I could be wrong. I think it would be fun to have a character you can vent with!

umm it's really too bad that they were just gossiping about things like that without having verification before. :ermsmile:
Personally, I have no idea who Gilderoy was modeled after. She made it sound like an acquantaince she saw and tried to avoid. So I'm not sure it was her ex-husband. But, whoever it was will not be known until JK decides to tell!!
I doubt she will tho! I know if it was me, I wouldn't tell the person! hahaha I bet they would be embarassed!

You know... that is why I truely dislike the media. They post something without getting the facts straight and then apologize and act like they really care... oh well. At least they did apologoze and did reprint saying what happened.

Wow. Im amazed.. they actually apologized.. I mean yeah sure magazines flat out lie about stuff or exaggerate the truth all the time but apologize for it?? thats a new one..

haha...that makes me wonder...how horrible of a person was he that jk rowling was compelled create a character based on him? wow...he must really be an unbearable person...
not that i can't relate...i've met some terrible people...but still...gilderoy lockhart...i'd probably chunk a shoe at him if i met him... :whisle:

They are not the first newspaper to grow humble and meek after (probably) being threatened with a lawsuit, there's been many incidents before in which papers had to pay huge fines to people they slandered/told fictitious stories about. And JKR sure has the money to afford some top class solicitors, so I guess some people at the newspaper just got seriously scared!!

I dunno about you guys (you're probably thinking like me... ) but I think it's  awefull that the Newspaper people said that!!! It isn't very nice putting information if you're not positivly sure of it!!!!! And imagine all the rumours now!
Poor JK!!!

I am really happy they apologized to her for that. The paper really didn't have the right to go making up a story like that. Someone must have told them the story but it wasn't a very reliable source now was it? I feel bad for JK, this whole thing made her look bad. Making up a horrible character basing it on your ex husband... that is a mean thing to do and very much unlike JK! :sorcerer:

I dont think that it is a case of they did it because they knew they were wrong i think it was more a case of her Solicitiors said they HAD to retract the story.
