[DUMBLEDORE (played by Sir Michael Gambon) is standing at the podium in front of the Great Hall. The Staff/Head Table is behind him. He is giving his welcoming address to the student body at the beginning of the year feast.]

DUMBLEDORE: We would also like to welcome our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Dolores Umbridge.

[UMBRIDGE (played magnificently by Imelda Staunton) utters a high, girlish giggle. She sits at the Staff/Head Table beside SNAPE (played by Alan Rickman) and MCGONAGALL (played by Dame Maggie Smith). SNAPE gives her a look of disgust.]

I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing the professor "good luck."

[The camera scans the Staff/Head Table to show several teachers, including TRELAWNEY (played by Emma Thompson). DUMBLEDORE continues.]

As usual, our caretaker, Mr. Filch, has asked me to remind you...

[UMBRIDGE interrupts DUMBLEDORE with a small but distinct 'hem hem.' The teachers and DUMBLEDORE look around at UMBRIDGE in shock and surprise at the interruption. HARRY (played by Dan Radcliffe) leans forward to whisper to HERMIONE (played by Emma Watson), his eyes never leaving UMBRIDGE.]

HARRY: She was at my trial. (HERMIONE turns around to look at him.) She works for Fudge.

[HERMIONE looks back up to the front, a look of concern darkening her face. UMBRIDGE crosses over from her seat next to SNAPE up to the podium where DUMBLEDORE stands. She begins to speak to the students. She is wearing all pink from head to toe, including a pink hat. She has a sweet simper on her toad-like face. Her voice is high and light, her tone condescending, her pace slow and very clear.]

UMBRIDGE: Thank you, Headmaster, for those kind words of welcome. And how lovely to see all of your bright, happy faces smiling up at me.

[The camera scans the Great Hall. The STUDENTS look up at UMBRIDGE with no expression, except maybe boredom. UMBRIDGE continues with a speech that is very slow and clear.]

I'm sure we're all going to be very good friends.

[The camera shows FRED and GEORGE (played by James and Oliver Phelps). They look at each other with doubt and amusement, and then turn to look at UMBRIDGE with disdain, their chins on their fists.]

FRED AND GEORGE: That's not likely.

UMBRIDGE: The Ministry of Magic has always considered the education of young witches and wizards to be of vital importance. Although each headmaster has brought something new to this historic school...

[UMBRIDGE pauses to nod her head at DUMBLEDORE. DUMBLEDORE politely bows his head in return. UMBRIDGE continues, pacing up and down before the students.]

...progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged.

[The camera shows RON (played by Rupert Grint) looking back at HARRY and HERMIONE in half-amusment, half-exasperation. UMBRIDGE continues.]

Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected, and prune practices that ought to be prohibited. [She says the word 'prohibited' in a light, scary whisper. The sweet simper has never left her face.]

[The camera scans the Gryffindor table showing NEVILLE (played by Matthew Lewis) among the students listening to UMBRIDGE. UMBRIDGE finishes her speech. Her face goes from a slight simper to a toothy grin, and UMBRIDGE omits a final, slightly eery, girlish giggle.]
