The Courier Mail has a new interview with Dame Maggie Smith. She briefly discusses her role as McGonagall in the Harry Potter films. Quote:
Yet Smith has achieved massive international recognition for her Professor McGonagall in three Harry Potter movies in the past four years.
"Well, yes, for a younger audience," she says. "Not that I do a vast amount in those films. Of course, it can absolutely stun children if they suddenly connect you. I suppose I'd be noticed a bit more if I walked round in that hat all the time. Sometimes, I'm in a restaurant and I can see them thinking, 'Hmmm, I know who that is', and when they work it out, they go completely to pieces." Then what happens?
"Then you sign all sorts of things for them and say, 'No, I'm afraid I can't turn into a cat'."

"I'm lucky to have got McGonagall,' she says. "I suppose there's Mrs Malaprop and things like that. Joan says you develop into grotesques, which is what these parts are. It's not a moan, it's a fact."

I love both actresses. They are both a woot in so many roles. I had actually hoped that Rowling would create a role that Judi could play. She is outstanding just as Maggie is. I truly see why they are both Dames. Excellent talent.

I have always like Smith's HP character, stern yet fair. You can also tell how much she really cares about Harry, the students, Dumbledore and Hogwarts in general. She is definately an accomplished actress with many projects under her belt. I have seen some of them. Smith is well entitled, as is Judy Dench, with the title Dame.

I remember when she was here in Australia I was lucky enough to quickly catch her coming out of a press conference type thing and managed to say quickly "I love you as McGonagall!" or something like that as she walked past. She looked surprise for a second and then laughed and said "thank you" and kept walking.
Poor women must have been very confused as I sounded completely random, but she was nice enough to not ignore me and for that alone I think she's a wonderful actress who deserves all the praise she gets.
