An increasing challenge has come in choosing the details for the covers and chapter art, which reveal hints but do not disclose the plot. The cover for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is her favorite.

"It's dramatic, and the expanse of it is almost like a stage," she said.

Although Harry Potter made her famous beyond the world of illustrators, he has made her comfortable, not rich.

Illustrators usually own the originals, and the Harry Potter art, reproduced in prints and posters, is a cash cow.

Q What do you think about the acclaim this new role has brought to you?

A It's amazing that ... every time I open my mouth in public now, it seems that one or two of the children present are ardent listeners to the Harry Potter books. So much so that one of them, when I was in McDonald's, heard me talking to my grandson. A look of amazement came on his face and he and his friend came up to me and said, "Are you the guy who does the audio books?" and they were "gobsmacked," as they said. One of them said, "Could you order my hamburger as Dumbledore, please?" and the other one said, "And can you order my French fries as Dobby?" and so I did that, and they were absolutely thrilled.

Q Why was it important to you to create distinct voices for each character?

A When a child, especially an American child, is reading an English book with hundreds of English characters in it -- and in England every 10 miles has a different accent -- it would be very difficult for the child to appreciate the accents. But should a narrator bring those characters to life by inventing a voice for each one, then what the child in America is listening to gives that character another dimension. Hopefully even Harry Potter, which was my own voice [as] a young Jim Dale ... has grown over the years. Now, in our last book, I've just let my voice be the same as it is now.

Dale finished recording the book several weeks ago, setting in motion a production frenzy designed to ensure that the audio book is ready for release the same day as the print version. This is the same highly unusual process (most audio books come out weeks or months after the regular version is published) used for most of the previous "Harry Potter" books.

"All I can tell you is that those 134 voices (for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") hold the record so far," Dale said.

Overall, Dale has created over 200 voices for the audio versions of all seven "Harry Potter" books. More than 5 million copies of the audio books have been sold since the first one was released in 1999, making them the best-selling audio books of all time.
