Natalia Tena talks Tonks & Deathly Hallows script in LA Times

The LA Times' Hero Complex blog has been updated with their Natalia Tena interview, where the actress talks about Tonks' role in Half-Blood Prince, how her character is in the sixth book, the fact that she begins Deathly Hallows filming in August, and her various opinions on the plots throughout the Harry Potter series.

Quote:

What was the best part of working on “Half-Blood Prince”?

NT
: Well, I just had one scene, and we shot it in the middle of the night. I was doing stunts, which is what I love most. They wanted to get stunt doubles and I was like, “No, I want to jump through fire!” Sometimes you do feel a bit stupid. I remember standing with David Thewlis [who plays Lupin], and it’s 3 in the morning, and going, “Yeah, David, fight invisible fire snakes.” It’s like basically dancing to nothing. You do feel a bit stupid at times, but it’s funny.

Tonks is in just one scene -- which I won't spoil -- but in fact, it’s a scene that doesn’t exist in the book, right? Any idea how its creation came about? [Very minor spoilers in her answer.]
NT:
I don’t know. I think they wanted to keep Tonks in it somehow. In the book, she’s very depressed all the way through until she finally she gets with Lupin, that’s when she gets her normal hair color back. In the film, they just had me looking very strange with Lupin and that’s why her hair is a bit dark [instead of her favorite pink] and short, though they don’t explain it. In “Half-Blood Prince,” a lot was edited, and actually I thought a lot of stuff was added in unnecessarily. But I haven’t seen the film yet, so for all I know it works out well in the end.

Tonks’ hair is very, um, distinct this time.
NT:
I had a mullet, mate! For ages, I had this mullet until someone on the street stopped me and said, “Darling, can I cut your hair for free? Because you look a bit weird.”

You start shooting “Deathly Hallows” next month. What can you tell us about the script?
NT:
I’ve read Part One and it’s brilliant, I wasn’t so sure about the last movie but this one I was like, “Yeah, they got it spot on.” I’m re-reading the book right now. I started having insane dreams again. Whenever I start a Potter film, I get these dreams. The last dream I had I was in a war and the sky was blotted with broomsticks and I couldn’t find my wand. It was so intense. I always have mental, intense, war wizard dreams when I’m doing the films.

Had you read the books before you were cast?
NT:
No, I hadn’t read any of them. My friends were obsessed but I never got into it, probably because my friends were so obsessed. They came with me to my audition to try and translate the language for me, like explain what muggles and Gryffindor was. I had no idea what was going on. By the third audition -- I had done two and I wasn’t getting it right -- director himself reamed me. He said, “I’m going to give you one more go at this” – this never happens, by the way – “I’m going to give you one more go because I feel like you’re it.” By that point I had done my homework and read the books and I walked in and did it once and he screamed, “That’s it!” And they filmed it and I got the part.

What do you think you did differently?
NT:
I feel like I was just in it. Before I had no idea what was going on. Before my third audition I sat in a trailer and I watched all of the movies and I loved them.

Do you remember how you felt when you read the last book?
NT:
Very intense. Suddenly you see my parents in the book and my mom is supposed to look exactly like Bellatrix. It was intense. And I love the fact that Tonks is pregnant. That she got married in the middle of all this chaos. It’s like she thought it would be a really good idea to get married and get pregnant and keep fighting.

I just reread the bit where Lupin tries to join Harry, Ron and Hermione on their journey and Harry gets really angry at him because Harry’s lost his parents and he says the one thing you should never do is run away from your wife and your kid. That was quite a cool thing for Harry to do. Tonks is over the moon and Lupin is freaking out. I ask you: What’s wrong with a sterile wolf cub that changes color? It’d be lovely. He’d be the coolest kid at school.

Right, but it doesn’t end so well for Tonks.
NT:
Like a lot of people, I love a bit of blood and gore. I was a bit sad that Tonks didn’t get a death scene in the book! I was really hoping that Bellatrix would kill me in mid-air while I’m stabbing her with a wand. But apparently you just see me dead. But I love that you get to see my son when he’s older.

Back to the "Death Hallows" script. What specifically made it so good for you?
NT:
I like the last because it’s trial times. You really get a sense of what everyone is worth. There’s a point where Ron leaves and I was like, “Wow, Ron actually isn’t up for it for a bit.” Also, I really got a sense in the script that while Harry is important, it’s his mates that do a lot. Actually, if he didn’t have these two mates he really wouldn’t be winning. He needs everyone to believe. It’s quite an interesting concept because then you ask, well, is it interchangeable? Could it be anyone else that could have been the Chosen One?

I love her! She's so wonderful! Not my first pick for Tonks, but she has brought life to the character in her own way!

I'm a bit disappointed they're not having the Lupin/Tonks love story in HBP and that she's just in a scene that's not even in the books! That's a bummer!

Aris 07-09-2009 03:59 AM

Why is she the most adorable thing ever??? And about the baby wolf changing colors, that made my heart skip a beat! I love her! She's amazing!

also it's a major bummer that she's only in one scene. A scene that I'm probably going to hate because it has no value and totally will not make sense. But when Harry gets Stupfied, who is going to find him on the train!?!?!?! it's supposed to be Tonks!

Her not being so sure about the last movie? I'm curious if she means DH part 2 or Half Blood Prince, I hope she means Half Blood Prince ....If she means DH part 2 I'ma gonna get worried, fantastic tho that she said it seems they got part 1 spot on.

Good Interview tho, Nat Tena is a cool girl :D

and I actually liked her mullet from what I saw HBP screenshots

Antwone Thomas 07-09-2009 04:14 AM

Woah, she thinks the attack on the Burrow scene was unnecessary. Another reviewer said it was too, but just one.

The trailer indicates it will be Luna. Argh I'm so tired of fans being so nit picky about the films not being exact to the book. The feeling will still be there ... that's what counts in an adaptation ... not if every line and ever character is in.

"He’d be the coolest kid at school." She's so funny ! I love her.

Carmen Zabini 07-09-2009 04:49 AM

Its apparent that Natalia is a fan. She's got some great insight and has really thought about her answers. Wow. I actually liked her answers better than most the others. I like that she wanted a bloody death scene! She sounds like a really cool chick.

DecemberGirl 07-09-2009 04:58 AM

She is brilliant! She seems like she would be so much fun!

lotrfrk11 07-09-2009 05:04 AM

Haha oh man, her interviews are the best.

Richard_13 07-09-2009 05:55 AM

Cool! she's a cool person!! :)

Ginny3 07-09-2009 06:00 AM

She's so funny!

TeddyRemusLupin 07-09-2009 08:34 AM

cool.

half_blood_princess1 07-09-2009 08:55 AM

She is so funny. But it is a shame that she will only be in one scene, I was hoping she would be in a few more and it is really sad that she had to die in the book and I think her way of dying would be much better than just being found by them all. Nat Tena will be missed...

Weasley1903 07-09-2009 09:01 AM

She is so cool and funny :D I love her!

PaPiTai 07-09-2009 10:18 AM

Only one scene? that sucks, i like Tonks...

laura-tonks 07-09-2009 12:37 PM

What an amazing interview! I love how she has the nerve to slightly criticise what the filmmakers have done :P

“Yeah, David, fight invisible fire snakes.”!

Love her insight into DH as well, and how cool is it that she has HP dreams?!

murdette 07-09-2009 01:46 PM

I love Natalia Tena and I think she is a perfect choice for Tonks :D

AndromedaBlack 07-09-2009 02:12 PM

Haha! I love Natalia and Tonks! It's a real shame that she wasn't given a bigger part in Half Blood Prince, especially when her part was soooo important. But hey, looks like she has a bigger role in Deathly Hallows! And OMG I LOVED her comment about Bellatrix and her comment about the snakes. This interview really made me day. :)

Lupinfangirlx 07-09-2009 02:27 PM

i love her..she is cast brilliantly! i really wish she had a buggr part in order of thephoenix and now they've cut down her part in HBP loads..but hopefully she'll be in deathly hallows more ;)

MissRastaban 07-09-2009 02:41 PM

This was a really interesting interview and I liked the fact that she came across as so honest, and uncowed by the powers that be. All the other other actors are so bland in what they say about the films. Even someone like Daniel Radcliffe, who is the anti-bland when talking about everything else! He's not my favourite in the cast, but he always gives the most amusing and interesting interviews.

A couple of reviews (definitely a minority) have said that there's not enough action in the film. Good - this isn't Transformers, there doesn't need to be a lot of action, but it might have been better to have the action at the climax, instead of in the middle of the film. That way it wouldn't end as an anticlimax, leaving those reviewers feeling a bit deflated. Even if they'd just included the funeral, it might have been a more satisfying ending.

We can't be sure what Natalia thinks was an unecessary addition, but the attack on the Burrow is the first thing to come to mind. Apparently Yates was worried about repeating himself with two attacks on Hogwarts in successive stories. However 5 children and the Order (including Tonks, so she could still be in the film) against Death Eaters, isn't the same as any number of magical creatures, all the teachers, pupils, Death Eaters and Hogwarts itself all having a big punch up. Especially as the latter is much larger, longer fight, with several events during it (Crabbe, Snape, Harry) taking place away from the main fighting.

A Death Eater attack on the Burrow, on the other hand, will happen early in the first DH film, so ironically, Yates will end up repeating himself anyway. I hope we hear more from Natalia - it's good to hear of someone who's been converted by the books and has actually read all the ones that are relevant to her, despite having a small part. I'd also prefer her version of Tonk's death - that's a change Yates should definitely consider!

Brilliant Interview! I love her! I love what she said about the person on the street and her hair.

Padfoot7 07-09-2009 03:07 PM

"Yeah, Daivd, fight invisible snakes!" Hah! That was hilarious! She's brilliant!

iwantorlando05 07-09-2009 03:56 PM

She's awesome as Tonks and I can't wait to see her in HBP. It sucks that she's only in one scene since she appears in the book quite a bit. But hopefully they will make up for it by giving her a death scene in Deathly Hallows.

I LOVE YOU NAT! I BOW DOWN BEFORE YOUR CANDOR!
