| | | Michael Gambon talks Dumbledore Empire Magazine has a new interview with Michael Gambon in which he discusses his role as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films. Quote: How does this one feel different with Mike Newell in charge?
Well, Alfonso was great. He was like a kid. So the children loved him and we used to have fun and games. Mike, who I have never worked with before, is similar. He likes throwing things in the air and changing conventions. I think that is what Warner Brothers want.
We had a big scene in the hall, where Dumbledore speaks about the new term, in all the films. That has become a bit standard so Mike changed it, I now walk among the kids at the tables. I leave the lectern. It’s stuff like that that kicks it up the **** a bit.
Quote: Do you have an input yourself?
You can do what you like really, and they say, “Don’t do that.” The other day I grabbed two kids round the neck, fondly, and did a scene like that and Mike said, “Oh, leave it in.” It frees it up a bit. Yesterday I did a scene where I get hugged by this great big guy, from middle Europe. I play it as though he has broken my ribs, to get a few laughs, you know?
Quote: Do kids approach you on the street when you haven’t got your beard on?
No, they don’t. But a kid came up to me the other day, though, and says, “Gandalf can I have your autograph?” and I said, “Piss off!”

Now I think about it, Dumbledore does put himself on the kids level a lot, so coming off that high lecturn of his will be interesting. To be honest, I'd say that too. What's the point in giving an autograph to someone who's under the delusion that you're someone else, never mind the audacity!

Oh, Michael Gambon is awsome! lmao, Gandalf! I would've said exactly the same.
hmmm ... Dumbledore leaves the lecturn. I wonder what other slight things they change and if it's good or bad.
No offense to Michael Gambon but I think Richard Harris was better as Dumbledore. but thats my opinion.

While I love the Dumbledore character and Sir Michael Gambon is a decent Dumbledore. He isn't Gandalf or Sir Ian McKellan. I shall forever miss Richard Harris, for he is Dumbledore. Gambon isn't. At times when I see him in the movies I picture Harris and Harris' voice saying the lines. Gambon just doesn't have the same charm or wink.
I read LOTR before HP and Gandalf shall forever be my favorite of favorite characters. I actually had hope Sir Ian would take Dumdledore, but at least he did or could not due to obiligations to other parts.

I disagree slightly. Harris had the wisdom for sure but he was too weak. His Dumbledore could never have swan through those waters or mounted a broom. And he never portrayed the eccentricties of Dumbledore -- which Gambon does. The reason McKellan wouldn't was because he disagreed with the money from Potter going back to America; he thought the British film industry should benefit in some way, which it currently doesn't. As mush as I agree with him I wouldn't turn down a part in Potter because of it. Then again, why play two of the same type wizards? Could get boring.

hahahahaha funny interview... I like that guy, he has a lot of ehmm... "peps" like we say around here... He has a young spirit... Though I do agree that I prefer Richard Harris as Dumbledore than Michael Gambon... Gambon does give a great personality to Dumbledore, but when I saw Harris for the first time, he really was exaclty what I pictured Dumbledore would be like... May he rest in peace...

The kids are remarkable, really remarkable. I’m not saying that because I am in the bloody films. I mean Daniel is so cool and with it. He is unfazed by anything. The great luck was to get that boy I think, because he is terrific. ah Dan is cool!! he is the best!!!! |

Hehe, that was funny. I think I would've had the same reaction to say **** off. No one puts a beard on and acts to get mistaken by some child who assumes you're the other guy with the beard who can act. It's interesting how Mike Newell decided to let Dumbledore walk past the tables and go amongst the students. It gives a different perspective. It's not what I imagined exactly from the books, but it looks good from what I've seen.

We spent time here. We made friends here. That's a part of us.
Cause Hogwarts is bigger than any of us, of any of it's founders,
and it's going to be around long after we're gone.
Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.
That's the thing about Hogwarts.
No matter how long you're away from it, there's always a way back. |

And why are they making Dumbledore walk between the house tables. They should follow the book

He can be quite naughty in interviews, so it was quite likely that he did say that to those kids!

I think both Mr Michael Gambon and Mr Richard Harris were perfect for Dumbledore.
