Meet the new breed of 'adultescents'

Being obsessed with things like Harry Potter is becoming the new trend for people who are determined not to grow up.

The Observerreports that books like Potter and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials have helped double the number of adults reading children's books.

They drive cars that appeal to the child in them - the chunky, toy-like Audi TT sports car or the girlie new VW Beetle complete with vase and plastic flower. They obsess over PlayStation2, go on holiday to Ibiza, tuck a copy of Heat! inside their Financial Times, have given up skiing for snowboarding and enjoy reading Harry Potter and listening to Coldplay and Radiohead as much as their children.

But the inverse can also be said: While some adults crave to satisfy their inner-child, children today are acting a lot older:

Step into the world of the tweenager. Not for him or her the frivolities of youth. These savvy youngsters aspire to the grown-up lifestyle of the ultimate tweenagers, US idols Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who run a multi-billion pound tween business selling high fashion, grooming, magazines, mobile phones, and computers to eager 11-19-year-olds.

When they move out of their 'tweens', these driven youngsters get jobs sooner and often work harder than their parents.

Adults, be sure to read the rest of The Observer's fascinating article. It even includes a list of things to do if you're a kidult. Another term that provokes a chuckle is rejuveniles, found in this article from Intelligent Enterprise Magazine, which rounds up several other reports on this subject.

My mum read all of the Harry Potter books and so did my English teacher. They both loved the series and are as excited about reading the next book when it comes out as I am!
I think teenagers and adults may be more obsessive fans than the small children! HAHA!

Hey chickies I'm in my mid thirties and I love the Harry Potter books and I recently got my mother-in-law who is nearly 60 to read them and she loves the books as well. They are timeless stories of good virsus evil you dont have to be a pre-teen teen or very young adult to enjoy them.

Thank god, I thought I was the oldest person on here at 25! My mother-in-law to be is 64 and she loves the books too, I think its wonderful how you can just enter a whole new world without having to worry about adult stuff, i.e. mortgages etc.., Its the best escapism I have ever had.

well i dnt think its the age that matters its how much u luv the books is wat matters. i mean u could b lyk 40 and lyk the books. Also couldnt u say that lyk teens could act reallii imature too? cuz lyk im turning 13 in march(26) and i have the brain of a 6 year old and peoples' say im a blonde stuck in the wrong body lol. no offense to blondes of course.. but lyk teenagers dnt try to b older all the tym cuz i knoe by peoples' in my school that most people are reallii imature and we're most of the part wacky. i mean who reali wants to grow up?? no one every1 wants to stay 12 or 13 or stay in there teens. i mean i dnt think ne one could honostly say that they wouldnt want to b young fr their lyk all their lyf. So i think that most teens and stuff take advantage and dnt try to grow up so fast. except for the people that think they're better than every1 else so w/e.. lol im happii i said that now im gonna bzzounce byess!!

How can you NOT get addicted to it!?! I never thought it would be something I would like then a few years ago I decided to read the first book and I finished it that day. It had me hooked from the first chapter. Why not adults too?
