THE third Harry Potter wizard tale was yesterday given a surprise M15 plus rating by the Office of Film and Literature Classification.
The OFLC said the rating for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was because of its "horror element".
JK Rowling's much-hyped Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, released in 2001, and The Chamber of Secrets, 2002, both received the lower PG (parental guidance recommended) rating and were box office blockbusters.
According to the OFLC's ratings system, films receiving an M15 plus rating are not recommended for persons under 15 years of age – although the movie received considerable praise by fans younger than 15 at its world premiere in New York last month.
The rating does not require adults to accompany children seeing the film.
Australian distributor Road-show Film Distributors could not be contacted last night but it was expected they would appeal against the decision.
The only available date for the objection to be heard is next Wednesday, a day before the movie's Australian release.
Prisoner of Azkaban deals with more sophisticated themes than the first two films, reflecting the growing maturity of the teen wizards, and is the dark tale of a wizard who has escaped prison and is believed to be hunting Potter.
A computer game based on the film was given a G rating.
Last year the book was expelled from the library of Melbourne's Maranatha's Christian School because it fell outside of the boundaries of the school's "fantasy policy".  | |

HorseDung! It cant be M15! That's ridiculous! That is total crap! I saw The Ring which seems to be such a freaky movie but I didnt get freaked out! This is a story 8 year old people have read! |

i have no idea whut that means but i think that it is rated pg 13 here in canada which means parental gaurdian are recomendded to accompany their children if they are under the age of 13 but the theater will not deny the child entry if there is no parent, so other words it can be viewed by n e 1.

Yeah, it's a little over the top I admit, I watched Jeepers Creepers and that was a 15 and it scared the hell out of me - so to have POA a 15 is pretty pathetic.

Then again kids cant comprehend the pyschological horror that is in PoA - the concept of having your soul removed from your body, your parents being betrayed by a friend which led them to their death. The themes in this film are very adult - I know alot of kids who've seen it who dont understand the proper storyline, just the wand waving and flying horse thingy. (In their words)
Perhaps this'll give HP some credibility.

Yeah but then again kids under the age can actually get into M 15+ movies. My brother got into heaps of movies that were M when he was about 10.

*shocked* See thwe thing is, the rating is only to give the 'viewers' an idea right?
It doesn't mean that kids under 15 CAN'T go right? I mean, yea it IS scary - but isn't PG13 enough???? :ermsmile:

Yeah we dont but usually they rate it PG and then they put like warning:mild horror themes or whatever. I mean Troy is rated M and that is like heaps goory and bloody and stuff. I think it will be revised

Hmm, having seen the film I don't know whether I agree. There was one jumpy bit that was a bit scary, because it surprised you, and i heard quite a few gasps (I won't give it away) the dementors were done very well, and could be scary for some people.
I guess the whole idea of hearing Harry's mum dying, the dementors sucking our souls, the dementors kiss (you do see the mouth at one point) and the idea of Buckbeak being executed. It depends. And it deals with the theme of murder and wanting to kill Petegrew quite a lot. I still wouldn't think it was scary enough to be rated M15 (I'm not really sure what that means - other than not really suitable for under 15), but it depends how you view it.
I still wonder about GOF and if they are going to do the being tortured under Crucio, and the cutting of harry and Pettigrew, I mean that's quite horrible in the book, I don't know if they'd show Peter's hand being cut off. And Cedric actually dying. I don't see how they can sugarcoat that lot.

Wow! If PoA is M15 then what will OotP be?!  But Its rated PG here in the US... which means that its aloud for 8 year olds... there is quite an age gap! :sorcerer:

People who are 5-6 yrs old have read the book!! I'm sorry but that's a load of rubbish. 5/6 year olds can barely read big-print books let alone HP. The oldest kids who could read them would be about 10 and even then they might not have a proper grasp on the content and plot of the series.
