Summary:
But the BBC - which is behind the poll called The Big Read - says the competition is "far from over".

Article:

JRR Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings is the hot favourite to win a poll to find the nation's favourite book.
The classic tale is so popular that bookmakers are refusing to take any more bets on it winning.

But the BBC - which is behind the poll called The Big Read - says the competition is "far from over".

A shortlist of 21 books has been announced. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire is also on it. The winner will be revealed on 13 December.

Winnie's in the running, too!

Other kids' books to make it to the final include Winnie The Pooh and His Dark Materials.

They are competing against classic tales including Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

In the weeks leading up to the winner being announced, programmes where celebrities argue their case for their fave book are being screened.

"We would urge viewers to vote for their favourite and make a difference," said a BBC spokesman.

Lord of the Rings will triumph!!! The nerds will reign forever, Yay!!!! GO LOTR!!!

And yes, Lord of the rings was written way way way way way before Harry Potter and Tolkein put a heck of a lot more work into making LOTR than J.K. did for HP, don't get me wrong I love HP and I respect J.K. as a writer but in my opinion Tolkien is the God of fantasy literature, for me he originated the genre and deserves this award more than Harry Potter.

i also agree with you ree, LOTR is a adventure story that experiences different cultures and languages, while most of the HP story take place at hogwarts, and as you said HP is a bit childish, but some people cant stand the mature literature, so they turn to childish books, although that isnt wrong, it just a bit pathetic that they dont read to probably most of their standards, o well their loss
Well, i've read Shakespeare, Dickens, Dumas, Wilde, the Brontes, Garcia Marquez, and so on.
So i quite disagree with you, HP is as good as mature literature, HP is literature.
I think it is pathetic how you come here trying to talk what i'm sure you think are big words, but make you sound really snobbish.
I feel pity for your narrow minded views, and your rash judgements.
What does LoTR being a great book have to do with bashing Harry Potter?, clearly this is just some poor lost soul's PATHETIC attempt to get some attention.
And this is a HP site, it's called snitchseeker, so you must have known that this site would be full of fans of HP, i mean it must be obvious even for you. So don't be so surprised if people don't react well to your CHILDISH comments.

come one children, let's spread peace, it's what J.K. and J.R.R. would have wanted I think HP fans and LOTR fans should learn to coexist nicely.

nothing but the thing is, im not bashing HP, LOTR is known to many as the greatest trilogy ever written and when a book, whether it be HP or another book, to be argued ( to most people ) that HP is as good as LOTR is a pretty big deal.... in other words i like HP i jus like LOTR more because its a better book in MY OPINION.

sooooo mmm yea, no 1 gave you the write to bash other peoples opinions

a. You did bash on HP so don't back down now, stand to what you said.

b. You are conscious that what you're saying is offensive, but you keep on doing it.

c. Take a look around and realize that this is mainly a HP site, this was posted on the Harry Potter news page.

d. How can you not realize that stating that people who cannot read mature books turn to Harry Potter is not offensive?.

e. You just don't go to a Harry Potter site and bash on Harry Potter ('cause yes, you're bashing).

f. In case you haven't noticed Harry Potter isn't a trilogy.

g. You act all righteous, and dare accusing me of bashing, but treat people like they are stupid because they like Harry Potter?. What if some people think that Harry Potter is better than LoTR?, it's their right, so don't give me lessons about respecting people's opinions. Begin with learning to respect them yourself.

2nd of all samanthalee1983 there r ALOT of similarities between LOTR and HP if u want proof go to Muggle Net and he has a list of similarities
Well, I've never actually read LOTR because I was forced to read The Hobbit in grade ten and I hated it. So the only thing I really have to compare are the movies (LOTR and HP) and I didn't see all that many similarities. I'm not fanatic about LOTR so I'm not about to start reading a bunch of extra stuff about the history of it or similarities between it and another book(s). I just don't care enough. The LOTR movies are fantastic, I love them, but I'm not gonna put any more effort into them than popping in the DVD and sitting back.
I, however, have read (and now own) all five HP books out so far and am addicted to anything Harry Potter. If you think HP is childish you obviously are not reading it very carefully because J.K. puts layers in her books. The Characters are not just one dimentional and everything is connected. There are so many themes: Fascism, Racism, Power, Good vs. Evil, etc. If you read carefully you'll find that the books are not childish at all, in fact they're quite grown-up.

and samanthalee1983 in one of JKRs first interviews she stated that HP was specifically written for kids around the ages of 9-13 that is considered (to me personally) a young/childish age.... yes i just called myself childish, o well.

anyway i am done arguing with you two on our opinions

lotr is the best!!!!!whatever you say ive been converted when i read the lotr trilogy!!tolkien spent YEARS creating his books and jk spends just about a year or so. tolkien has a more wider view or perspective of things than jk. lotr is mature stuff. i admit hp is childish and easy to read bcoz its not complicated like lotr.
lotr has its own history, unlike hp just plain stuff.

I agree that LOTR is a much broader and more planned out world on a larger canvas. Though JKR spends a lot of time planning her books as well. They aren't just thrown together in a year (although the first four were released in lightning speed that way).

It's hard to compare Tolkein with JKR because they are both so excellent in different ways. I also love the Lemony Snicket books, but wouldn't dare compare them with either Tolkein or JKR, although in some ways they are even superior. It all depends on what you are looking for.
