But the BBC - which is behind the poll called The Big Read - says the competition is "far from over". Article:
JRR Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings is the hot favourite to win a poll to find the nation's favourite book.
The classic tale is so popular that bookmakers are refusing to take any more bets on it winning.
But the BBC - which is behind the poll called The Big Read - says the competition is "far from over".
A shortlist of 21 books has been announced. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire is also on it. The winner will be revealed on 13 December.
Winnie's in the running, too!
Other kids' books to make it to the final include Winnie The Pooh and His Dark Materials.
They are competing against classic tales including Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.
In the weeks leading up to the winner being announced, programmes where celebrities argue their case for their fave book are being screened.
"We would urge viewers to vote for their favourite and make a difference," said a BBC spokesman. CLICK HERE TO VOTE

How on earth is LOTR copying HP? LOTR was first written in the 1930's r 40's or something like that. There is no way JKR could have travelled back in time to the 1800's and wrote her book and then come back and published it again in 1997, then claim JRRT stole her ideas, and if she did write it before him, wouldn't the last two books be out already. It doesn't thake you a centuary to write two books. Stop raving about things you don't know about and think before you write, please!

LoTR did NOT copy HP! You could say HP copied off LoTR! Anyway, I hope Little Women wins coz LoTR is really kinda boring (I read it. I know) But I doubt it will. Modern kids...LOL. Not bad for one of thirteen.

Maybe people should read the whole article before they start complaining. I think the point is, and *Potter* can correct me if I'm wrong, to get people to vote for their favorite book so LOTR at least has some competition. And Since HP was mentioned I don't see anything wrong with this article being on a HP site.

I love the lord of the rings trilogy but I think I am going to vote for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire since I enjoyed it more than any books ( except the other Harry Potter books) and since it has crearly made a difference in the world by making millions of children read. | |

The lotr author is dead, so, yea, he can't be copying...

Re the HP vs LOTR thing:
(Sorry, tried to leave this alone but I just can't.)
First of all if anyone was copying it would have to be J.K. but I don't see that many similarities. The story lines are different enough that you can't read LOTR and say you've basically read HP or read HP and say you've basically read LOTR. Most things got their starting Idea from somewhere else anyway (How many of us have seen the same sort of characters in countless horror movies?) there simply aren't any new ideas -- just new combinations of old ideas.
Deal with it, give it a rest, and enjoy the books as they are.

i have read lotr 3 times .I think those who say its boring need to grow up a bit. Because as compared to hp its better, more real andMORE MATURE.On the cotrary HP is childish , 4 instance ALL THE DEATH EATERS ARE BRITISH, VOLDEMORT'S GREATEST RIVAL IS BRITISH ,VOLDEMORT HIMSELF IS BRITISH, Does JKR's world ends here.

need i repeat miself?
2nd of all samanthalee1983 there r ALOT of similarities between LOTR and HP if u want proof go to Muggle Net and he has a list of similarities
i also agree with you ree, LOTR is a adventure story that experiences different cultures and languages, while most of the HP story take place at hogwarts, and as you said HP is a bit childish, but some people cant stand the mature literature, so they turn to childish books, although that isnt wrong, it just a bit pathetic that they dont read to probably most of their standards, o well their loss
