| | |  Looming actors strike may affect Half-Blood Prince release
The Guardian reports today that an impending actor’s strike next June could affect release dates for hundreds of major motion pictures, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Quote:
The actor's strike looks set to take place in June next year and will in fact manifest itself as a combined strike by the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America (West) against the Producers Guild of America. The predicted strike has already sent Hollywood into a frenzy of planning, with many studios reportedly accelerating production of films to avoid gaps in their release schedules.
The strike is over royalties from sales of movies over the internet and on DVD, which are not covered in the current deal between the various guilds.
| However, Jim Broadbent (Horace Slughorn) did recently state that he finishes filming in May 2008. Indeed, with shooting starting next week, it is very likely that filming for the sixth movie will be completed before this strike actually occurs.
Although it could potentially affect the film in post-production if actors, the director, or producer are involved with these unions.
It is important to note that no change in production has been announced by W.B., but if it is, we will let you know. The release date for Half-Blood Prince remains as Nov. 21st 2008.  | |

If it's in America, then surely HBP won't be affected...cause it's filmed in Britain with all-British actors. If I'm wrong (and I probably am  ), could someone please explain? Heheheh. |

Harry Potter movie rights are owned by Warner Brothers which is an American franchise hence making HP an American movie by proxy. If you want to act in a movie sanctioned by an American movie mogul like WB, you MUST belong to SAG. It's their union.
What I don't get is, why June 2008? That's six months away. They need that long to plan a strike? Stop working...now! That didn't take much. I understand why they're protesting but the delay is just humorous. | |

I quite agree with you ^^ it seems kind of pointless to do it at all. The purpose of a strike is to cause I serious blow to what ever industry you are protesting against, it defeats the purpose to give them advance warning. They are basically saying "Hey by the way, we are planning a strike to cripple your industry enough to get what we want, and by the way it will be almost a year from now." That gives the industry plenty of time to organize and plan in order to make the strike as minimal as possible. What a waste of time. | |

The fact that they're planning it for next year is not quite stupid if you think twice since, if I'm not mistaken, it's around May, June and July that most people go to the cinemas. That way they'll affect a bigger quantity of people I suppose.
*sigh* I just hope HBP won't have many problems anyway =/ |

| I thought it wasn't according to studio, but according to production. Given that major studios produce most movies wouldn't that create an alarming monopoly?
The reason for the delay is probably because they don't have issues with whoever they're working for now. Contracts last between weeks and months, and with June being when many Christmas films are shot, maybe it will have a bigger impact?
By June Half-Blood Prince will most likely be in post-production. So I don't think there's anything to worry about. Especially since most of the actors & the director are associated with Equity.
