| | | Jane Yolen talks Harry Potter
Children's literature author Jane Yolen has spoken briefly about Harry Potter in an MSNBC interview. She points out similarities between her books and the Potter novels. Quote: Have you read all six Harry Potter books? What do you think of them?
I read the first three. The fourth one stopped me in my tracks, partially because even though the story moves along, I just don't feel like they're well written.
Besides, I wrote a book called "Wizard's Hall" [in 1991, eight years before the first "Harry Potter" book]. And there's an awful lot of "Wizard's Hall" in it [the Harry Potter books].
I always tell people that if Ms. Rowling would like to cut me a very large check, I would cash it.
["Wizard's Hall"] has got a boy named Henry [who] goes to wizard school, doesn't think he has talent. He has a good friend with red hair. There's a wicked wizard who's trying to destroy the school, and the pictures on the wall move and speak and change.
I have kids who write to me all the time and say, "I thought you had stolen Harry Potter, but my teacher pointed out that you published it eight years before Harry Potter."
It's also worth noting that Rowling started writing Harry Potter in 1990; a year before Yolen's book was released.

I think theres bound to be some overlaps between all books, if you compare nearly all books there is always going to be similarities. For example, compare Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to HP, two boys from disadvantaged backgrounds, both similar looking, both are outsiders, both look up to a crazy yet sane person (willy wonka and dumbledore). If you make comparisons, theres no doubt that somethings are going to be similar. I think someones just abit sour that her books didnt go as far as Jo's have.
Yes, exactly. HP is often compared to the Chronicles of Narnia (they somehow connect DD to Aslan, which I *don't* get... well, maybe a little). But it's true; the simple fact is, a lot of fantasy books have basic elements: someone who thought he/she had no place in life, but then realize they have a great destiny and must face challenges, ect, etc. Yes, HP has that, but it's got so much more. I mean, I *love* Yolen's books, personally, but I just think: if you're going to write fantasy, all of them are going to have some basic similarities. Quote:
well, i dont see a snitchseeker for her books....
LOL SnitchSeeker is special. There's no SnitchSeeker for anything else. *hugs SS*

Yikes...cant people give it a rest?almost all storys concerning magic has a dark wizard whoz despewrately trying to "take over the world"! So no surprise when JKR intended to write about a magical community she ought to have came up with her own version of the evil demon whatever ....as for her writing skills,i just cant stop admiring them and also her sense of humor....especially when she writes about fred and george!
JKR rules! |

Jane Yolen is just a money-hungry-hater!!! And if her books were better, maybe more than 3% of the population would have heard of them!!!!! i know i haven't until today!!!!!!! Jane, God really doesn't like jealousy, soo back off J.K. cuz clearly she knows what she's doing. You could stop acting like a hag and perhaps, learn a thing or two from her.

^ Seriously, people, read the book before you make a call. Her book is very, very good and I enjoyed it much, and just because the author is being stupid and greedy doesn't mean the book is terrible. Honestly, people, say you love a character on a TV show and think the actor portrays that character beautifully, but in real life, the actor is a snobby pile of doxy droppings. It's the same thing with her book. It's good, but she's being ridiculous. And it's probably not as well-known because it's only one book, not a series. Jane Yolen is a fairly well-known fantasy author, so it's not like the author isn't famous, either.
Can everyone just stop putting down the book you haven't even read just because the author is nasty?

Wow, she could have said that a bit nicer, and I am sure there have been other writers who have written about wizards and what not before her as well.

I luv how J.K. Rowling started writing the first potter ONE YEAR BEFORE this woman published her book - sum advice Janey: do your research before you start spreading lies. Either way, no one really cares....atleast i don't There's no point in making this statement - it won't help you in anyway and it won't hurt JKR in anyway either....she's not gonna lose any fans so you might as well get over it and don't flatter yourself too much - there's similarities in all fantasy books.

Ha Ha Sollust...how true.
While both Yolen and Rowling obviously are great writers, I don't think that Yolen has ANY claim to ANY of JK's money. Correct me if I am mistaken, but I don't believe she's been there with Rowling since 1990 looking over her every word...

I haven't read many authors in the YA section but I have read a couple. Patrica C. Wrede, Tamora Pierce just to name a couple. I have heard of Jane Yolen but have never read her. I have reall all of JKR's books. I think that says it all.
