| | | Jane Yolen talks Harry Potter
Children's literature author Jane Yolen has spoken briefly about Harry Potter in an MSNBC interview. She points out similarities between her books and the Potter novels. Quote: Have you read all six Harry Potter books? What do you think of them?
I read the first three. The fourth one stopped me in my tracks, partially because even though the story moves along, I just don't feel like they're well written.
Besides, I wrote a book called "Wizard's Hall" [in 1991, eight years before the first "Harry Potter" book]. And there's an awful lot of "Wizard's Hall" in it [the Harry Potter books].
I always tell people that if Ms. Rowling would like to cut me a very large check, I would cash it.
["Wizard's Hall"] has got a boy named Henry [who] goes to wizard school, doesn't think he has talent. He has a good friend with red hair. There's a wicked wizard who's trying to destroy the school, and the pictures on the wall move and speak and change.
I have kids who write to me all the time and say, "I thought you had stolen Harry Potter, but my teacher pointed out that you published it eight years before Harry Potter."
It's also worth noting that Rowling started writing Harry Potter in 1990; a year before Yolen's book was released.

And it's also worth noting that Yole wasn't the first to write about a wizard school. For instance, A Wizard of Earthsea and Harper's Hall. She, also, wasn't the first to write in the genre of fantasy, so many of her elements she's can't claim as her own, either. Fantasy is built off of other fantasy

All these writers who say JKR's books aren't written well - well, can that many readers be wrong?
If her own books/story were so great then she might have more readers/money herself - she wouldn't need a check from JKR.

Well said, I don't think that many people can be wrong!!
I can totally understand why she's upset, I know I would be if I'd had an idea to write a book about a boy wizard and then a few years later someone else wrote a book with some of the same ideas and their's was infinitly more popular than mine. However, she obviously wasnt in the right place at the right time. If she's got any talent, then she'll think of another idea and she'll be just as good as JKR. Everything comes to those who wait!

Hogwarts RPG Name: Varius 'Cuddles' Tipps Third Year Ministry RPG Name:
Kaylee Grace Magical Creatures | Farmer Carter | | Ama's Secret She just wants credit, seriously a few thigns to point out.
+ JK did start writing a year before the book was published (like Emma said)
+ My friend has brown hair, doesn't mean i have stole everyone who has a brown haired friend's idea, its a colour!
+ What book doesnt have a villan?
+ There are a few books with wizardring schools, shes not special
+ Moving Pictures idea is actually a very common idea anyway
+ Henry and Harry may be similar but they are different names anyway!
+ I would also like to point out, Voldemort isn't wanting to try and ruin the school. He wants Harry.
I don't think JK would be as stupid as to make it obvious she copied if she had copied her stuff. I don't believe it one bit, just someone who wants credit and i think someone should write all of the above to the magazine to make sure the message is put across. Jealousy between authors, and if the books weren't well written please tell me why they have been made by movies and probably 90% of the world has heard of it and maybe 3 % has heard of her book. I've never even heard of it. |

I love the way JK writes the Harry Potter novels. She writes in the perspectives of what teenage boys go through and other guys can compare to many of the things that Harry's facing in reality.

I feel really sorry for JK that someone is trying to ruin her glory when JK should be Happy about her new release. Joe doesn't need that kind of stress, especially when she has a newborn child. The stress of lawsuits is too much for a mother!

Don't you love people like this? Here again, people who are obviously jealous. I love the people who are obviously not selling on the level of JKR and still enjoy the books. Now, of course, she doesn't have to enjoy them. That's her progrative. But to go out and diss JKR, coyly accuse JKR have stealing her ideas, and then act like, "Oh, I read the first three..." is just... insulting.
I like what Leaky said... not only did JKR start writing HP in 1990, but that she was in another country where the book was obviously nowhere to be found. Perhaps this woman should have looked up her facts before accusing someone of plagarism.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Ottery St. Catchpole Third Year | A collection of random blatherings from your friend Ottery St. Paris is ♥♥♥ Gone With the Wind I was really looking forward to this article...my first thoughts were, finally someone with credibility...I like Jane Yolen she's a very underappreciated author *Ottery says* Go appreciate her!
Then of course I read her remarks. I think it's deplorable that the only people who can appreciate her, are her fans or Stephen King. I swear, it's as if the whole book industry hates her because she's as big as they get. It's a jealousy born of aaargh. I swear, instead of being happy to her for her success, everyone is out there crying rivers about how they wrote the book. Newsflash: JRR TOLKIEN WROTE THE PLOT TO 90% of all fantasy novels...seriously, he almost single handedly created the genre...problem is he didn't create it...there were authors before him too... Nothing is new...I'm sure there have been other books about moving pictures...that's what they used to call films... It's sad and it's tragic and it's really a sign of the times...people are so wrapped up in themselves that they can't be happy for someone else's success. And why not? They've been writing for years in obscurity, and suddenly she shows up and her books blow up...so it's okay to hate her. Well it's not. It's wrong. It's petty jealousy. I don't care where JK got her plot, or how similar it is to anything else, considering everything was inspired by something else...she's stated before she doesn't read fantasy I don't think she deliberately took the plot and I think it's in bad taste to think so highly of yourself that you were the one who she took the idea from. Seriously sad I think. I'll read her books, but I'll think twice before ever reading her comments, critiques or reccommendations. What these authors should be doing is writing more and critiquing less that's what they are writers not social critics.

Before JKR, there wasn't really a story about witches and wizards that wasn't about evil witchcraft. For all whose concerned, JKR is one of a kind, with ONE kind of a story.

| I doubt that JKR stole anything from her-especially since she started early that Yolen's book was started. I think she's trying to draw attention to her self and her book. And frankly, I don't care were JKR got anything-I still love the books for what they are. And it was to well written! |
