| | | J.K.Rowling won't allow unofficial Potter sequel
In an interview with a German newspaper sold on the streets by the homeless, to coincide with their translation release of Deathly Hallows, Jo has spoken about the future, writing Deathly Hallows & her readership. Quote:
"I will make sure that no stranger ever writes Harry Potter books. Harry Potter is mine. I'm the only one who understands him."
Quote:
Asked whether the final Potter book with lots of killings made it suitable for young children, she replied: "I know what you mean, and it filled me with unease to hear that Harry Potter is read aloud to 5-year-olds. They should be at least seven."
This is the second time Jo has helped the newspaper, the previous time being around the release of Order of the Phoenix when she allowed them to print the first chapter before it hit stores. Three million copies of book 7 were printed for the release on Saturday. |

I totally wouldn't want anyone else to write Harry Potter. It just wouldn't be right!

But I do wonder, how does one go about preventing an unofficial sequel. Do the publishing companies actually go to the original author and ask for printing permission? Somehow... I just can't see that happening. =/ You can actually see some of this with Star Trek and Star Wars books. I actually checked to see what it took to write a Star Trek book once. There's quite a bit of rules and guidelines, you can only go through one publisher, and they in turn send it to Paramount in order to see if it should be published. You aren't even allowed to diverge from the 4 main series, or have original main characters, until you are an established Star Trek author.

| It wouldn't be the same if anyone else wrote a sequel. Jo is the only person who will ever fully understand Harry, she owns him. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Phineas Fischer Fourth Year | *snortles* MAMA!Shroom She can probably prevent unofficial sequels (or the dreaded prequel), but only as long as she's alive. What with the hundreds of thousands of fanfics out there, someone will definitely swing it after she and the copyright are no more. I gotta say that I'm not sure it'd be as good if it wasn't Jo, but it could still be enjoyable. |

Uwa Naoke Department of Mysteries | Well, of course she should be the only one allowed to write HP in the sense of being published and sold. Fanfiction is just to keep all us crazy fans from dying because-- i--it's over. -sniff- I could imagine someone trying and people just going, "..." It's really not something you can recreate. |

I think the fact that she allows, and even encourages, fanfiction should be good enough for us. I mean, at least that's free!!

I totally agree with her. Harry Potter is hers and she really is the only one who understands him, seeming she is the author.

If anyone decided to write an unofficial sequel they would be breaking many laws and infringing rights of JK Rowling, she could sue for thousands, if not millions. Also, any publisher would be an idiot to even think they could do it, they'd end up going under and the books would be taken off the shelves.
There are unofficial books written on HP already but they are looking at the facts of what JK Rowling has written and looking at the world she has created, they are not re-writing a new story about Harry Potter, because it's just illegal. It's a good thing because it protects authors, there can be nothing worse then someone stealing an idea you have taken years to create.
