| | |  J.K. Rowling to receive honorary Harvard degree, attends special reception
The Harvard Crimson is reporting that, as well as giving a commencement address this afternoon, J.K. Rowling will be receiving an honorary degree from the university. Last night the author attended a special reception in anticipation of the event.  Quote:
Comparing Rowling to yesterday’s Class Day speaker, Federal Reserve Chair Ben S. Bernanke ’75, Professor Maria Tatar, who teaches a course on childhood, said she thinks Rowling will deliver “a witty, inspiring talk that steers clear of the subprime crisis and gas prices but will still engage with tough, real-world issues.”

But it would be myopic to downplay Rowling’s “extraordinary” impact, Tatar said, even if it is one different from that of political or economic figures who typically speak at Commencement.
“Just because she’s not doing the nitty-gritty of the economy or politics doesn’t mean that she’s not bringing something to the table that’s very powerful,” the former dean for the humanities said.
The speech will be streamed live here between 2:15PM - 4:00PM EST (7:15pm - 9:pm BST).

Honourary degrees can be crap...especially is they are awarded from a college or university no one has heard of....Harvard, like other Ivy League schools, simply dont award them that often and certainly not to just anybody. So, in my opinion, this is an honour.

It's interesting how that photo can't be more than 24 hours old, and we've already seen it  I wonder if any author in the history of literature has ever been watched as closely and obsessively as her.  I'm sure DH Lawrence had some stalkers on his tail in his day, but in this instant-gratification society it's dizzying how fast we see and know stuff

That's so cool! That reminds me of my freshman year in high school, two students who would have graduated in the 50's were awarded diplomas with the class of 2005 because they didn't finish high school at our school, and couldn't get diplomas due to political reasons.
