| | | J.K. Rowling talks Harry, Hermione & relationships
J.K. Rowling discussed the relationship between Harry and Hermione - as well as how the Harry Potter films' screenwriter Steve Kloves interpreted it in Deathly Hallows - in the newly-released Harry, a History: Quote:
"I tried very hard to soften it, I suppose," Jo said. "Just because someone had a view on Harry/Hermione didn't mean they weren't genuine, or that they were necessarily misguided. In fact, I will say this, Steve Kloves who has been the script writer [on the Potter films], who is enormously insightful on the series and a very good friend, after he read book seven he said to me, 'You, know, I thought something was going to happen between Harry and Hermione, and I didn't know whether I wanted it or not.'
"I had always planned that Harry's true soul mate, which I stand by, is Ginny, and that Ron and Hermione have this combative but mutual attraction. They will always bicker, there will always be rough edges there, but they are pulled together, each has something the other needs."
I stared at her, sensing she wasn't finished, and a sense of foreboding crept in around the edges.
"[Kloves] felt a certain pulll between them at that point. And I think he's right. There are moments when [Harry and Hermione] touch, which are charged moments. One when she touches his hair as he sits on the hiltop reading about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and [two] the moment when they walk out of the graveyard with their arms around each other."
I was holding my breath at this point. She wasn't done.
"Now the fact is that Hermione shares moments with Harry that Ron will never be able to participate in. He walked out. She shared something very instense with Harry.
"So I think it could have gone that way."

Absurd to even think about Harry and Hermione romantically linked with each other. Since Book one, all signs point towards R/Hr.

Interesting, though, how Jo (obviously a Harry/ Ginny shipper ) admits that it could have been written another way, even at that late point in the series. I think if she had decided to go the Harry/ Hermione route in Book 7, it would have been terribly out of place, what with having set up other romances for them for the six books previous. I agree. But I think that is what Jo was essentially saying there. Sure, she could have gone in that direction, but she would have to have done it from the beginning and laid the foundation for it. I think that was what she meant - if she had laid the foundation in the earlier books, then those moments in DH could have worked towards a romantic relationship. But she didn't do that and never developed any romantic attraction there. Without romantic attraction, those moments can't be seen as anything more than friendship.
This isn't the first time Jo has discussed alternatives like that. She has quite a few of them on her website - like the idea of Hermione's dad being the one to find Harry or the stone being in James and Lily's vault. There are a lot of "could have's" in the series - but all of them would have required changes to be made in all the books that would change the story as a whole. Harry and Hermione being involved romantically falls along the same lines, IMO. There was no way Jo could have done that in DH after she had laid such a solid foundation for R/Hr and H/G in the first six books. I think she was referring to that as an alternative she could have used when she first started writing the books - not something that could have happened in DH after she had already established R/Hr and H/G. ETA -
About Kloves - he's not an H/Hr shipper. Kloves realized it would be R/Hr from the beginning. It was his idea to add the "almost hug" in COS and the awkward hand grab in POA, etc... There's no denying that Hermione is obviously his favorite character and he certainly tends to put her on a pedestal in the movies, but he always knew it was going to end up R/Hr - Jo praised him for catching that during their joint interview on the COS DVD. I think that is reflected in his comment to Jo as well. Since he is technically an R/Hr shipper, it makes sense that he would be confused by any possibility of H/Hr and saying "I didn't know if I wanted it to" fits with that perfectly, IMO.
