| | | J.K. Rowling talks Harry, Hermione & relationships
J.K. Rowling discussed the relationship between Harry and Hermione - as well as how the Harry Potter films' screenwriter Steve Kloves interpreted it in Deathly Hallows - in the newly-released Harry, a History: Quote:
"I tried very hard to soften it, I suppose," Jo said. "Just because someone had a view on Harry/Hermione didn't mean they weren't genuine, or that they were necessarily misguided. In fact, I will say this, Steve Kloves who has been the script writer [on the Potter films], who is enormously insightful on the series and a very good friend, after he read book seven he said to me, 'You, know, I thought something was going to happen between Harry and Hermione, and I didn't know whether I wanted it or not.'
"I had always planned that Harry's true soul mate, which I stand by, is Ginny, and that Ron and Hermione have this combative but mutual attraction. They will always bicker, there will always be rough edges there, but they are pulled together, each has something the other needs."
I stared at her, sensing she wasn't finished, and a sense of foreboding crept in around the edges.
"[Kloves] felt a certain pulll between them at that point. And I think he's right. There are moments when [Harry and Hermione] touch, which are charged moments. One when she touches his hair as he sits on the hiltop reading about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and [two] the moment when they walk out of the graveyard with their arms around each other."
I was holding my breath at this point. She wasn't done.
"Now the fact is that Hermione shares moments with Harry that Ron will never be able to participate in. He walked out. She shared something very instense with Harry.
"So I think it could have gone that way."

Le hmmmm. Just because Harry and Hermione shared intimate moments together doesn't mean that there was a mutual romantic connection. Could have gone that way, sure, but not necessarily. Interesting, though, how Jo (obviously a Harry/ Ginny shipper ) admits that it could have been written another way, even at that late point in the series. I think if she had decided to go the Harry/ Hermione route in Book 7, it would have been terribly out of place, what with having set up other romances for them for the six books previous.
...First to post

I agree with you FoxFire, I see Harry and Hermione sharing moments like a brother and sister would or a best friend not in a romantic way. Ron and Hermione were ment for each aonther and Harry soul mate is Ginny. That What Harry was doing in book 7 for is Ginny and maybe have a life with her or that she would have a happy life without Tom Ripple.

I also agree that Harry and Hermione have a special relationship, they've always share the fact that they're both raised by muggles and only found out they are witch and wizard recently... I feel they understand each other in a very large part because of that...
Ron on the other hand has always lived in the wizarding world, and for that he will always be a little different than Harry and Hermione.
I also had this weird feeling when I was reading Deathly Hollows about H&H, but like Puff said... it's a brother-sister love.

I think those moments, intense as they may be, are moments lacking any romantic charging. A friend can be there for you, and connect with you, without necessarily it meaning anything more.
Basically, I never would have bought the Harry/Hermione thing.

Could have gone either way? There are very subtle clues about Hermione's interest in Ron from Goblet of Fire (Winter dance, anyone?) to Deathly Hallows. And conversely, there are clues about the warm fondness the Harry and Hermione share, like the brush on the head in DH. I never for a moment suspected a Harry Hermione match. Just wasnt there, in my opinion.

Hmm... the hints in the books between Ron and Hermione have been there since Book Three, and actually since the intial antagonism between them in Book One. I've never been able to understand where the H/Hr thing came from.
The instances Jo quotes from above, while sweet, did not strike me as emotionally charged. Harry has often, especially during DH, found Hermione annoying and she seems nervous of him at times. I've never sensed anything romantic between them in the books. If anything had happened between them it would have seemed totally out of step with the relationships up to and through the seventh book.
Also, while I wanted Harry to be happy and it was clear that he cared for Ginny very much and might fall in love with her eventually, I didn't get any indication that he already had. He only looked for her name a couple of times during the Horcrux search, which really surprised me. There was no diversions in Harry's head where he pictured himself off with Ginny and away from everything he was facing. I thought that was surprising.

I think it's the second time she says GINNY is Harry's soulmate. How many times does she have to repeat it so that Kloves will finally accept it? If he likes Harry/Hermione, that's his opinion and I respect it, but the films have to be CANON so it would be good if he didn't put in them what HE'd like to see.

Hmmm ... I only saw Harry and Hermione as brother and sister. I never thought for once that either of them were interested in the other romantically.

Very good point of view.
I think that Harry and Hermione did share an amazing realtionship together, however, it does not necessarily have to be a romantic one. They did love each other, but not romantically. The scenes he described, when I read them, the picture in my head was of friendship, not romance. I would do something like that to my brother or good friend also, doesn't have to be romantically inspired. We have seen Harry and Hermione grow up together and she never had a problem with him and other girls, instead she even gave him advice, but not the same with Ron and her.
It's really great that Jo had planned all along for Ginny to be with Harry Jo's the best!

I agree it could've gone the other way, but I knew at the end of HBP that Ginny was Harry's soulmate, and the build-up to Ron and Hermione would've been to disappointing if it was building to nothing. I am happy with the way it ended, plus now EVERYONE got their happy ending!!

well, I think that Harry and Hermione have a very intense relationship. BUT in a brother sister way. Truthfully, I would say that they are even closer to each other than siblings are because yes, there is that undeniable boy-girl attractions even when you love the person like family, which makes their bond stronger.
But a Potter/Granger wedding in the series would have been absolutely terrible! Seriously, Ron & Hermione and Harry & Ginny just can't be torn apart!!!

I'm glad things ended up the way they did, or Ron would be at Harry and Ginny would be mad at Hermione.

I think she's completely right with the couples how they were and how they truley should be.
However, I did pick up on the charged sections in book 7 and I could see if they were developed only a fraction further, Harry/Hermy could have happened. I'm not saying meant to be or should have been. I'm talking caught up in the moment and a relationships lines becoming blurred.
Now that would have been a brilliant book 8!!! The fall out with Ron and Ginny ha ha.

If she went the other way in DH, that would have been really horrible. I mean, HBP was pretty much all about Ron and Hermione bickering, but they loved each other at the same time. I would have been very disappointed and disgusted if Harry and Hermione were together at the end. Thank goodness Jo is a H/G shipper! R/Hr forever! ♥ |

I think Harry and Hermione are a brother and sister type thing cause it was alwasy HarryandGinny and Ron and Hermione. I'm glad JK went the way she did.

It's true that there are things that can be interpreted as Harry/Hermione, but it would never be quite the same as who they really end up with.

Yeah, Harry and Hermione do have a good relationship but in my opinion them being a "couple" just wouldn't work out right. Ron and Hermione always had this strong connection, like Harry had with Ginny.

I guess it could have gone either way, but I've always been a Hr/R shipper. I see those moments as brother and sister. I would hold my twin brother's hand in a moment like that. We have inside jokes and secrets, with a look at each other we know we're thinking the same thing, but that does not mean we want to start making out.
