| | J.K. Rowling responds to fans' criticisms of Nagini casting in 'Fantastic Beasts' 2
To much of no surprise, some fans were not especially pleased with the Nagini reveal in the latest Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer, where actress Claudia Kim's character, the Maledictus, was actually the original form of Voldemort's Horcrux snake.
Fans took the casting and character transition to be racially insensitive and not a good representation of people of color in the Wizarding world film series. J.K. Rowling responded to this issue with the following on Wednesday.
Claudia Kim, who plays Nagini in the saga, spoke to EW and SnitchSeeker about her portrayal of the role, which she is incredibly excited about. Watch her interview here, and the final trailer here.
Additionally, Warner Bros. released a tenth character poster for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, this time of Kim as Nagini, which can be seen below.
Read SnitchSeeker's set visit breakdown of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, including the return to Hogwarts and London, and entering Paris's Wizarding world. Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, Poppy Corby-Tuech, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Tim Lewis, Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen serve as executive producers.
The film reunites the behind-the-scenes creative team from the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, including Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (“A River Runs Through It”), three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“The English Patient,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Gandhi,” the “Harry Potter” films), four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”), and Yates’ longtime editor Mark Day (the last four “Harry Potter” films). The music is by eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard (“Defiance,” “Michael Clayton,” “The Hunger Games” films).
Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures.
This film is rated PG-13 for some sequences of fantasy action.

When Nagini was revealed I became very excited. I love the little twists that Jo has in her world. It raises the question of, 'will future FB films have Tom Riddle turning Nagini into one of his Horcruxes?' It is a shame that people have to be critical of Jo because this is a woman who does her research into myths and legends when writing her stories.

It is my opinion that some fans are jumping to conclusions; they lack the proper knowledge but Jo, she doesn't. Like Gin, I am one hundred percent sure she did ALL of her research. In Hindi, "Nagin" means snake. Had they cast an Indian to play the role, being one, I'd have been proud. Just saying.
Jo continues to blow my mind and I personally LOVE this twist involving Nagini.

It smells like a desperate need for attention, "I'll tease JK so she will know I exist".
As a woman, I like to see Nagini as a woman and a Maledictus. Snakes have a wide range of symbolic meanings. The snake symbolizes vital force, rebirth, renewal, creation, life, sensuality, duality, light, darkness, mystery, temptation, deceit, death, destruction. The snake is also linked to the concepts of wisdom and prophecy, symbol of hope and fear of human races. I think it empowers women, while remember us that we should not plunge into being evil, as it can be a way with no return. Quote:

Nowadays someone will alwys find a reason for racial complaints. Had Nagini been Hispanic or Polynesian, or Arabic... someone would have complained. I think it's a very interesting twist.

Most of my fav writers have been attacked like this at some point or another, and it's worse when journalists egg them on in Twitter.
I'm Hispanic, and I would not mind one bit if Nagini were Hispanic, or if Jo created another magical being who was Hispanic.
Okay. Rant over. :giraf:
