| | |  J.K. Rowling privacy claim rejected by Press Complaints Commission
The Press Complaints Commission have today rejected a claim by J.K. Rowling that her privacy had been invaded by the Daily Mirror, Daily Record and the Scottish Mail on Sunday who all reported on a property she'd recently bought. The house in question was said to be close to the estate she already owns in Perthshire, Scotland. The articles were accompanied by pictures of Rowling's home, her new purchase and the surrounding area. Quote:
Rowling, through her solicitors Schillings, said that the articles, published in October last year, invaded her privacy by identifying the location of her Perthshire home. She complained that there had been a breach of clause 3 of the PCC code of practice.
In 2005 they upheld a complaint that stated that information provided by the Daily Mirror could identify the address of her home in London, England.
As the more recent stories did not name roads or streets or towns, the complaint was not upheld. Quote:
The PCC also said the name of the property, the county where it was situated and the town it was near were already in the public domain.
"While the commission appreciated that the complainant is someone who guards her privacy closely - and clearly objected to the attention given by the press to her property purchase - it did not consider that there was anything in these articles that contravened the code or the commission's guidelines," the commission said.
"Restraint upon further publication of the information would, in the commission's view, serve no purpose," it added.

 r they serious abt not letting Jo have her privacy? oh no!it'd open floodgates for press/public to overrun celebs/stars privacy...not good.

well since it didnt contain specifics then it makes sense why the case got thrown out.
i hate to say this, but JKR is in the losing end of the privacy battle. she's a celebrity now, even if they can keep specifics out theres no way to stop curious people from knowing what she does, buying a cup of coffee or buying property. she's still got it relatively easy compared to some celebrities like the Jolie-Pitts. within 24hrs of inking the deal with the France estate people around the world knew what the estate looked like, which town it was, heck even what was planted in its garden for pete's sake.
i dont know what JKR could possible hope to accomplish with her suing everybody left and right.

Its a bit poor for JKR, but i can understand why i was rejected if they didnt name a road address or street.
But with fame comes this privacy invasion.... not nice, but if i was a multi millionare / billionare, i would not care if some knew what TOWN i lived in...

I guess that's what happens when you become famous. Either way they're going to be annoying and burst your bubble. However, if she asks for some privacy, they should at least show some respect and give her privacy.

Once again, I agree w/ Steelsheen....furthermore, property purchases, whether subject to tax or not, are public domain. Period. People can find out how much you paid for your house, how many bathrooms there are, etc. In fact, i could pick any number of famous people and find exactly where they live by going onto their county's property appraisers office database. You can even use GIS to map it. And i know all this because i am an environmental scientist and i have to research property all the time, public and private lands.....it is amazing what is out there.

well here are two sides of the same coin: they should respect the privacy for the celebs....but the celebs also know what they can be exposed to....is a difficult subject.
Let's hope they don't disturb JK in a really disturbing way....hahaha...well you know what I mean, let's hope this doesn't go any further...
