J.K. Rowling impacts environment with changes in Deathly Hallows publishing

According to the Green Press Initiative, more than 30 million trees are used to make books to be sold just in the United States every year. After J.K. Rowling urged the company to make changes, Scholastic printed 65 percent of the U.S. first edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper. This means that it was created from responsibly managed forests, and contained at least 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper. These differences made a severe impact. 200,000 trees were saved, making the same carbon impact as if you were to take 1,577 cars off the road.

The print runs in the United Kingdom and Canada were 100 percent recycled.

It's good of JKR to do this and it adds more awareness of exactly how many trees are chopped down to make books. I'm glad that celebrities use their status to help awareness and hopefully to make some kind of change.

Despite all this, books are still one indulgence that feels necessary. We need books — especially the good ones.
Oh, self-sacrifice.

Thirty million trees per year is an absolutely insane number if you think about it. :(

Nice to see such initiatives supported, every bit helps.

Padie 07-18-2008 09:15 PM

Scholastic could've done a lot more, as shown by the greater efforts by Bloomsbury and Raincoast. It still baffles me that there aren't HP e-books - that would do wonders for the environment.

Hermionespell 07-19-2008 02:20 PM

That really is great :D

Sabrina_Snape 07-19-2008 05:32 PM

Well done Jo! At least there are some authors who realise just how many trees are used to make their works. This was a brilliant move and hopefully lots more writers will follow suit. :woot:
