J. K. Rowling Backs Forest-Friendly Books

LONDON (AP) -- Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling is urging her British publisher to print her next book on paper that comes from environmentally friendly sources.

Rowling and 13 other British writers are supporting a campaign by environmental group Greenpeace U.K. that calls on publishers to use paper that is friendly to ancient forests - those which have been shaped largely by natural events and are little touched by humans.

That means their books would be printed on paper that has either been recycled or certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-governmental organization with headquarters in Germany. The FSC certifies paper whose production is respectful of wildlife and indigenous communities.

"The forest at Hogwarts is home to magical creatures like unicorns and centaurs," Rowling said in a statement issued Wednesday by her London agent, Christopher Little.

"It is a good idea to respect ancient trees, especially if they have a temper like the Whomping Willow," the author said, referring to characters and locations in her popular books about boy wizard Harry Potter.

Other writers backing the campaign included Helen Fielding, author of "Bridget Jones's Diary," and Philip Pullman, who wrote the "His Dark Materials" series of books for children.

A spokeswoman for Greenpeace, Belinda Fletcher, said the group was in discussion with many British publishers about ending their use of pulp from high conservation value forests in Finland and Russia.

Fletcher said Rowling was urging her British publisher, Bloomsbury, to use paper that is friendly to ancient forests for her next book. The author has already started writing the sixth Harry Potter adventure.

Fletcher said Bloomsbury had not made a formal statement on the matter, and a publicist for the company did not immediately return a call Wednesday.

The Canadian edition of the fifth Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," was printed on recycled paper, said Neil Blair, a spokesman for Christopher Little said.

The Greenpeace campaign started in Canada and was being conducted in Britain, Germany, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands, Fletcher said.

I think that Greenpeace have lie to miss Rowling. In finland forests are all right. >

Value forests in Finland are save in here, they are proctect and those forests are in finland many years after Potter, we have here forests that are ok to make Paper, what ever Creenpeace says. That is really low to lie someting like we are killing forests.

Paper is really big deal to finland.

I hope that Rowling comes in Finland so she can see that threes are save.
