The Guardian has a feature today where they've spoken to those who have taught some of the most famous people in Britain - including J.K. Rowling's science teacher John Nettleship from Wyedean comprehensive in Chepstow, England. Quote:

Joanne would have been about 12 when I taught her. Her days at Wyedean were pretty miserable. The school was like a prison, and then her mum came down with MS. Anne Rowling worked as my technician, and Joanne would come and wait at the science block for her mum so they could walk home together. It was obvious the child was very concerned about her mother - preoccupied. She was a very quiet child. I don't remember her ever answering a question - she would go to great lengths to avoid responding. I think she was tucking it all away in her head to use later in her stories.

Hmm... Maybe she used one part of her mother´s colleague and some other parts from her other teachers? Or she just felt bad because of him since her mother was ill but still had to work? Even though it wasn´t the man´s fault her mother couldn´t retire. Childhood memories are hard to forget, as we see in HP books.

Agreed with the above, Mother of Merlin I hope they never get a hold of my teachers. 
Well, this was interesting...and a little sad. I don't know that they should have spoken to her teacher, really. Although, I did get insight on Jo's early life and normally I'd think that as cool, but she seemed to have a rough childhood. Especially with her mother: poor family. But it kind of amazes me too; she rose up from that shy child to possibly this era's greatest writer. I think that takes a great deal of strength and I admire her all the more.
