| | | An Irish Councillor denounces HBP
Councillor Roy Gillespie has asked Irish parents not to take their children to midnight release parties for ' Half-Blood Prince', referring to the fandom as a 'cult'. Quote:
Describing the specific time chosen for the launch as " suspicious", the DUP councillor said people would do better to buy a bible.
"These cults with their stories about witches are damaging, especially to young people who would be better off saying their prayers," said Mr Gillespie.
"I have two children and one granddaughter and I would not like to see her standing at midnight being told about witches and wizards.
"Children should be well tucked up in bed with their prayers said by that time," he said.

I'm a CHRISTIAN! I see their point, there are some REALLY overprotective people out there (Everywhere). I'm in the US, and the First Lady, Laura Bush Loves HP and she's a Christian!

Ok, I'm ashamed to call myself Irish right now, even if he is conservative or whatever, this is Ireland, his kids are learning about magic everyday in school when they learn history or read our folklore etc in this country, what does he think he's protecting them from? The only thing he's protecting them from by goin out at midnight to get the book is getting wet from rain, or possibly a mild case of hypothermia.
I can't believe someone would say that - I'm an I rish Roman Catholic and I am proud to be a HP fan. He can go stuff his prayers.

I pity the Irish people - if someone said that about England I would go up and shout at them what i really think of them!!! i love the hp books and don't care what some councilleors say - my advice to the irish - DON'T LISTEN TO THEM - THEY HAVE OBVIOUSLY NEVER READ THESE AMAZING BOOKS AND IT IS YOUR OWN CHOICE IF YOU WANT TO STAND UP FOR THEM. I CAN'T IMAGINE MY LIFE WITHOUT HP!!!

You think his children and grandaughter read the HP books behind his back? Maybe they have a secret floorboard to hide things, so they can be true to the Potter tale.
But seriously, I'm grumbling because nobody does midnight releases or any type of acitivity even near it, and he's protesting because they're done over there? Um, Counsillor, do you want to trade? Just for the night between the 15th and 16th? I'd come as quickly as possible I swear! | |

| Argh!!! Not again!! My question: Has he even read them?!? What could he possibly be protecting them from? There is nothing in those books that is objectable in the sense he is talking about!! The "protection" of kids really begins to frighten me sometimes! What are we going to end up with in twenty years when these "protected" children are leading the world? |

Yes kids, while we are on the topic of reading, stop reading all together.
It is ridiculous but funny. Im a Christian, and I find it so annoying when there are people like the pope saying stuff like this about the book. I know it is only an opinion (although whatever the pope annouces is ex-cathedra), but it makes it sound as if that is the general view. The Catholic church needs updating.

What bothers me the most I think about these things is that this person has probably not even read the books. If you are going to make comments about them, atleast read them and argue it intelligently. People underestimate children, just because its in a book doesn't mean that they are going to go out and try it.
