Post Independent bookstores to suffer losses due to DH discount mania

Heavy discounts on the final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is not going to do any favors to independent bookstores. Online book retailer Amazon.com has slashed nearly 50% off the book's original selling price of $34.99 and huge bookstore chains like Barnes & Noble Inc. and Borders Group Inc. have slashed 40%. These competitive prices from huge retailers have forced many independent bookstores to follow suit and slash their prices too. In doing so these independent bookstores stand to make little or no profit at all. Tim Allen an analyst with Jefferies & Co had this to say:
Quote:
It's so discounted, there's minimal, if any, gain. Retailers try to make up the shortfall by marketing loyalty cards, which they hope will entice shoppers back into their store
Caroline Horn, children's editor at Bookseller, a British trade magazine said that
Quote:
The bookselling trade has lost millions by having to discount Harry Potter as heavily as they do
In fact alot of independent booksellers have decided not to stock Deathly Hallows at all. This despite DH having broken many records for orders.
In related news, Scholastic Corp, the U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter series is planning to release a record-breaking 12 million copies of Deathly Hallows!!

I can understand that the smaller book stores would be kind of upset at the larger ones, but isn't that how most of the chain stores work? It's not the stores causing the independent bookstores to have problems; it's us for buying the books from the chains.

Oh, well! I DO think the book needs to be available to everyone, and if the smaller bookstores can't afford to stock the book at the discounted price, then perhaps they shouldn't be carrying it and leave it to the big retailers to market, in this case. They are probably better off, because no one is going to pay their prices for the book when it's so easy to get from the big chains like Barnes and Noble and Wal-Mart.

Where I'm getting my book from they're giving only a 15% off.
But thats the best discount we have where I live.

Here, it's 20% off the book initially (but they do that for all new releases, not just HP - and it's all stores), and Barnes & Nobel is giving an extra 10% off if you're a loyalty card holder. I'm not, and with the service I was given the last time I was in there, I don't want to be., so I won't be getting 30% off, and will still be paying about $20 - $25ish at the counter. *shrugs*

Ultimate Potterite Original original

Ohhh... Interesting. I do agree that for some places it is wise not to stock the book.

That's total bad news...I can't say it's DH's fault...I mean, what harm did it make?
