| | | Independent bookstores to suffer losses due to DH discount mania
Heavy discounts on the final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is not going to do any favors to independent bookstores. Online book retailer Amazon.com has slashed nearly 50% off the book's original selling price of $34.99 and huge bookstore chains like Barnes & Noble Inc. and Borders Group Inc. have slashed 40%. These competitive prices from huge retailers have forced many independent bookstores to follow suit and slash their prices too. In doing so these independent bookstores stand to make little or no profit at all. Tim Allen an analyst with Jefferies & Co had this to say: Quote:
It's so discounted, there's minimal, if any, gain. Retailers try to make up the shortfall by marketing loyalty cards, which they hope will entice shoppers back into their store
Caroline Horn, children's editor at Bookseller, a British trade magazine said that Quote:
The bookselling trade has lost millions by having to discount Harry Potter as heavily as they do
In fact alot of independent booksellers have decided not to stock Deathly Hallows at all. This despite DH having broken many records for orders.
In related news, Scholastic Corp, the U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter series is planning to release a record-breaking 12 million copies of Deathly Hallows!!

I hope the independent bookstores will do okay. It must stink getting so much profit from HP and now that it's near the end of HP they're loosing. Poor things.

Goodness =/ That's horrible for the independent bookstores. I quite understand why they're not going to stock DH, though it is sad they're not doing it.

I saw that same article earlier. It really is to bad for the independant book stores. But on the other hand, you really can't complain about cheaper Harry Potter books because that means they will be available to more people which is always a good thing as it makes owning a hardcover book like DH much easier for the impoverished.

Want my honest opinion? It's more fuss than truth. They say so to make you think they're selling really cheap. Tha amount they buy from the publisher makes the production cost for the same publisher go down, so the thing goes quite cheap for them.
Besides, when you have that kind of merchandise, your customers are bound to buy several other things, so they more than make up for the "discounts".

Walmart.com has it listed for $17.87. Too bad for indie bookstores, but the big chains are giving the customer what we want.

Here is a good point to all of this though. If parents are pleased that their children are actually reading instead of a video game then they should have no problem paying for the books no matter what their prices |

It really is hard, because the publisher, no matter how much it costs to make the book, will still sell it for the same bulk discounts to everyone, on a percentage. But the larger bookstores get a larger discount than the smaller bookstores can afford, because they can't buy nearly so much. And the big bookstores will be selling so many that it no longer matters how minimal the profit is, because the cheaper store is about to win out. Amazon's deal right now is that if you preorder before a certain date, then the lowest price they come up with until then is what you'll pay. I got a few emails from them saying "hey, our price went down, and even if they go back up before book is shipped, that's what you're paying!"
Good deals for most of us, but bad for the little guys. I think they should stock books at retail price, or near it, just for the sake of having it though. A few copies won't hurt them too much, and they might be pleasantly surprised.

I think the idea of not stocking it at all is really a wise choice for the sellers. If they can't make a profit from it, why carry it? Especially since every major chain has it, so nobody will be missing out anyways.
