| | | HP boosts & slows sales Forbes has an article listing the companies who list Harry Potter as a factor that either boosted or slowed their sales last year. Quote: Scholastic, the American publisher of the teenage wizard's saga, blamed its sales for the last two quarters in 2004 ($547 million, down 26%) on lower Potter revenue.
Quote: The Borders Group and Barnes & Noble also joined the whiners club, the latter saying that lower gross margins came about "due to deep discounts" on The Order of the Phoenix.
Quote:
Toymaker Mattel, videogame maker Electronics Arts and online bookseller Amazon all rubbed their palms. Apparently, Potter fans, lacking anything new to read, found solace in toys and videogames.

if you think about it, there is a logic reason to that. people who own a HP book would often share to others. then its up to them to either buy if for keeping or just read their friends book and let it be like that n just wait for the next one from them.
sales on toys and games i guess...people need something that they haven't tried yet or to keep them occupied...

Very interesting news!!!
But could probably be really true, it's kinda true what Riiya said, some of my friends just borrow the books from me, they don't bother buying the books coz they get to read it when I'n finished...guess I have to tell them to buy their own books!!!

Yeah, when I am visiting my parents during holiday and such, I usually take my copies of HP and everyone borrows them. There really isn't a need for having more than one copy in the family (but still I have bought many copies of each since they don't hold too well.) My sister however does own the POA game for her game cube. But the book companies shouldn't complain since HBP is coming out.

That's kind of funny. It's obvious that book sellers wouldn't gain anything since OotP because most everyone bought it in pre-sales or the day of and rarely any time after that unless they got into HP after that, such as me. But then I bought mine from amazon.com, the five book set, for a great price. Barnes & Noble and Walden Books and such didn't have that great price. And of course now I'm willing to get my hands on anything HP related such as games, toys, etc. I'm sure Hottopic had great revenues for 2004 considering I bought like 15 shirts and other items since I got into HP. lol

That's kind of weird, since I can see most people lending eachother books. But my friends and I have multiple copies of each book (one has 3 copies of PoA..one signed by JK *rawr*) so it should even out in the end right? Well, guess not.

Funny that. No that I care - I'll but the book as long as it'll cost no more than $30 - and I know it won't...heheheh

Some companies have their reasons to complain. But Scholastic shouldn`t.
And toys-makers are in good market position now.
They`re in big profit, so don`t cry!

Well, isn't it just for 2004 revenue? What about 2003, when OotP came out? They just didn't sell as much because there was nothing new last year, except for the movie and the games... Revenues should be up again this year. I mean, it's already a bestseller, so they can't complain!
