:sorcerer:

The magazine USA Today has an article which discusses the HP fan community as it ages, and our how our opinions of the books change.

There was one particular quote that caught me eye:

Parents have become "a little frantic," says Roger Sutton, editor in chief of the Boston-based The Horn Book, which reviews children's and young adult books. "It's ridiculous to read the series to 4-year-olds. The humor is wasted on them," he says.

Well sorry but I read to my four year old cousin and she gets it alright

im glad i got into hp right when it came out '98 i think. i was in 5th grade, good at reading, matured. i think ur cousin will enjoy it a lot more when shes older and can think about harry potter with a more advanced intelligence as far as age goes.

I tend to agree with the wasted comment. After all it seems quite ludicrous to read a book about 15/16 year olds to 7 year olds.

Quite right you know. Unless of course you were very good at reading, I suspect many on this site were like me and had an average reading level of a 10 year old when they 5 but some maybe not. Sometime I think J.K.R has a very stanrge sense of humor, or mabey it is just me laughing at stuff she put in there not meaning it to be funny. But anyway, the quote is right, 4 yr olds may enjoy the magic and action, but there is muhc more to the HArry Potter books than just that, and you would need to of more intelligence than that of an average 4 yr old to fully enjoy the books.

I think any age is acceptable. Personally, I started reading the books in 99. I was er (counts) 12. But barely....maybe I started near the end of 98. Anyway, I was no where near interested in hp when I was eleven, but back then I was also a cover looker. I saw and ugly kid riding a broomstick and it was a no go. My mom told me I should read it. So, at age 11, I picked the book up off the shelf, went home, read the first chapter, then put it away. A few MONTHS later, I picked it up again. By time I finished the three, it was only a month or two away from GoF coming out. Now I'll be 15 when Harry is. That makes me happy.

And we went on vaction i sat up in the hotel room for a day and then finished cos. So i could get poa. lol. So all in all it took me 1 month and a week to read all four hp books. and by the end i was about 7. lol.

:sorcerer: dude, Harry Potter is an excellent book. It's good for all ages. It might be hard for little kids to understand, but hey! It's still good.

I started reading 'em just after the first movie came out, so I would have been 15/16. I remember picking the philosopher's stone up when I was about 13 and reading the first page and thinking "this isn't anything special," but after the movie came out I read it again and was hooked! I'd finished 'em all in two weeks!

I don't think it matters what age you start reading them, they work on so many different levels. There's the actual story but then there's the humour and the so called "love story" so I think they suit all ages.

Yes,you are right it dose not matter what age you start reading the books i did not start till i was....12 and i still read them now and i am 14 so it really don't matter if you are 4 or 14 just what ever is you like to read.

The books are not age specific. Each age group gets different aspects of the story as they progress in age. Even Bugs Bunny scripts are funny for different reasons when you are an adult, but no one has said that children do not enjoy the cartoons. It is a further sign that these stories are well crafted; their timeless nature.

I agree! It doesn't matter how old y'are to read HP! I read HP1 when I was SEVEN, and I didn't have no trouble.

I was eleven when I first read The Philosopher's Stone, and I felt at the time that it was below my reading level. Still, I loved the story so much that it didn't matter at all. I'm seventeen now and I still love PS/SS, so I don't think it matters how old you are in the least
