Harry Potter causing Hogwarts headaches?

Marathon reading sessions may result in a wicked health woe
Wednesday, October 29, 2003 Posted: 2205 GMT ( 6:05 AM HKT)

Is Harry Potter a health menace?

(AP) -- Has the latest Harry Potter fantasy cast a spell of "Hogwarts headaches" on some of its most avid readers?

A pediatrician says he had three otherwise healthy children complain of headaches for two to three days last summer. It turns out all had been reading the 870-page "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in marathon sessions.

"The kids I saw were all avid Harry Potter fans who just plowed through the book," said Dr. Howard J. Bennett, whose office is in Washington. "A lot of my kids would be reading six, eight hours a day. And it's a big book for a 9- or 10-year-old child."

He dubbed their ailment "Hogwarts headache" after the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that the boy wizard attends. He said the youngsters' headaches were probably caused by tensing their head muscles for long periods. One of the children also had neck and wrist pain.

Bennett said he encourages children to keep reading the hefty book, which he enjoyed.

"But it might be nice to take a break periodically," he said, adding that two of the headache sufferers decided to keep reading and pop Tylenol instead.

Bennett described "Hogwarts headaches" in a letter to the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The letter in Thursday's issue is printed with a graph tracking the size and weight of the five books in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.

Bennett didn't hear any headache complaints with the earlier books, which started at 309 pages and grew. "If this escalation continues as Rowling concludes the saga, there may be an epidemic of Hogwarts headaches in the years to come," he writes.

But he really doesn't want Rowling to limit the size of her books.

"Just keeping writing great books. I wouldn't dream of giving her advice," said Bennett, who is the author of medical humor books.

At Public School 6 in New York City, 10-year-old Ella Schwarzbaum said she read the book a few hours at a time over several weeks with no ill effects. Schoolmate Galen Stump, 10, devoured it during a three-day car trip to Colorado.

"I got to read it all day, every day," he said.

Galen had occasional headaches that he blamed on the long hours and poor lighting.

Hmmm, book wrist cramps? The book is rather heavy for me too... but I think its definately worth it.

lol, I think that it's amazing that there are kids out there who are so excited about the books that they will read so feverishly to get to the end! Not that I didn't do it myself. I was in summer school and had work though, so I didn't have the luxury of being able to read it for hours on end.

But I agree with some of the people who have posted before me, it's a book, and there's going to be a looooong wait until the next one, so pacing yourself would be good. Besides, you can revisit it as much asyou want during the summer!

I always get headaches. It's a strange little condition I have- mostly because of my sinuses. Well, I did get a bit of a headache when reading it (for about 7 hours, I believe), but when my head hurt, I went to sleep and I paced myself after that! I never EVER read for that long again!

My sister got the first 4 books for Christmas and read them all through nonstop without stopping even to eat and sleep. I think she only got up once to use the bathroom. She didn't feel sick at all, just a bit dizzy (and that's probably from lack of food and sleep.) Though, she reads a lot.

Probably, if the kids paced themselves until they built up the amount they could handle, they'd be able to read for hours without getting a headache!

well..in my case..i also had terrible headaches...and also backaches...the problem was that i was soo amazed with the book that i didn't realise that the book was too heavy and that then that would have consequenses...but,,it was worth doing that...after all..my aches were completely gone...

i don't think jkr should write shorter books...i wish he wrote longer ones...

and although i had headaches and so, that could be avoid...any doctor can tell you that...(without offending Dr Bennett!)

wow, to me that means that if they can't handle the book, then don't read it. altho then they'd be missing out on a great series. i did get neckaches, but that was my fault for leaning over all day too long all slumped over.
