Harry Potter causing Hogwarts headaches?
Marathon reading sessions may result in a wicked health woe
Wednesday, October 29, 2003 Posted: 2205 GMT ( 6:05 AM HKT)
Is Harry Potter a health menace?
(AP) -- Has the latest Harry Potter fantasy cast a spell of "Hogwarts headaches" on some of its most avid readers?
A pediatrician says he had three otherwise healthy children complain of headaches for two to three days last summer. It turns out all had been reading the 870-page "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in marathon sessions.
"The kids I saw were all avid Harry Potter fans who just plowed through the book," said Dr. Howard J. Bennett, whose office is in Washington. "A lot of my kids would be reading six, eight hours a day. And it's a big book for a 9- or 10-year-old child."
He dubbed their ailment "Hogwarts headache" after the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that the boy wizard attends. He said the youngsters' headaches were probably caused by tensing their head muscles for long periods. One of the children also had neck and wrist pain.
Bennett said he encourages children to keep reading the hefty book, which he enjoyed.
"But it might be nice to take a break periodically," he said, adding that two of the headache sufferers decided to keep reading and pop Tylenol instead.
Bennett described "Hogwarts headaches" in a letter to the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The letter in Thursday's issue is printed with a graph tracking the size and weight of the five books in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.
Bennett didn't hear any headache complaints with the earlier books, which started at 309 pages and grew. "If this escalation continues as Rowling concludes the saga, there may be an epidemic of Hogwarts headaches in the years to come," he writes.
But he really doesn't want Rowling to limit the size of her books.
"Just keeping writing great books. I wouldn't dream of giving her advice," said Bennett, who is the author of medical humor books.
At Public School 6 in New York City, 10-year-old Ella Schwarzbaum said she read the book a few hours at a time over several weeks with no ill effects. Schoolmate Galen Stump, 10, devoured it during a three-day car trip to Colorado.
"I got to read it all day, every day," he said.
Galen had occasional headaches that he blamed on the long hours and poor lighting.

Hmmm, book wrist cramps? The book is rather heavy for me too... but I think its definately worth it.

Oh.. Camon. I have red it all, and I know that you cannot stop to read, but, I cannot believe that just HP would cause some headache. The problem is that they are child?? Why do not their family order them to read just one chapter for one time??
That's incredible. | |

Well, I read OOTP in 15 hours and I didn't get any headache, though my eyes were watering due to too much strain.

Solution: Take time out to eat, get a couple hours of sleep, be sure to go to the bathroom a few times during the day, and pop those pain pills. Honestly, Who can wait two weeks to find out how it ends? Besides, it was summer, so It's not like they had to concentrate on anything else.

Exept I don't think you should take pain pills... but whatever.... I just think that if you are starting to have a headache you should stop reading for a little while!

I hadn't read the books until this summer. I read em' all in 9 days. I 'd have to say that I was a little dazed after that week and a bit. Nobody could talk to me! But i did take like 1 hour breaks every now and then!

Well origionally I had been on a wait list for the book, but then I decided to buy it on my own when i saw it in a less popular bookstore in town. AS with other Harry Potter books, I had a nice dinner, went ot the bathroom, and at 7 pm sharp I began reading. I finished at 1 pm the next afternoon but it s a tradition for me to pull Harry Potter vigils, so I suffered none.

They had a similar article in Washington Post. Still it is impressive that an article on this subject got printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. :whisle:
I never had problems with headaches. I have to read law cases sometimes for my job. If that doesn't give you a headache, nothing will. I agree with what other people have posted--take a break--the book isn't going anywhere. :sorcerer:

since it was the first hp book i actually owned first before reading it, i spent quite a time procrastinating. i finished the book in 2 weeks! would you believe it? i finished the 4 other books about 4 days each! i don't know if its only pschological because i have the book, but finishing it didn't excite me as much as the 4 previous books did. kinda sad though.. but i still like to read it from time to time. |

 I heard this story on the news. I laughed and slapped my knee so hard that I got a red mark on my leg. Hehehe.
Some kids... gee. When your brain gets tired, it's time to put the book down and do something else! You can live a few hours without reading. Hey, we have to wait who knows how long for JKR to finish the NEXT book before we can read again!
I thought this was ridiculus. Just plain crazy. What's gotten into kids these days? |

I read OOTP in 3 days and I had the worst headache of my life. I think it was part eyestrain and part lack of sleep, but I couldn't help it. I would try to sleep, but I kept thinking about the book and what was going to happen next. I would get out of bed and start reading again. Crazy, I know, but I couldn't concentrate on anything else until I finished it. Now I'm sad because it will probably be a very LONG wait until the next one!
