| | | HBP & the great shipping debate The San Francisco Chronicle has an interesting article about shipping within the Harry Potter fandom and how ' Half-Blood Prince' has affected the way shippers view the novels. The article mainly focuses on Hr/H shippers. It refers to what happened in the sixth book in terms of ships and also mentions the interview between Jo Rowling, Melissa and Emerson, in which Hr/H shippers were referred to as 'delusional'. Quote:
Instead, it's caused an eruption of fannish dismay. "That woman has completely destroyed my faith in ever having a real relationship," opined one Harry/Hermione 'shipper on an online message board. Another pronounced the book "a large, steaming pile of decaying crap."
Quote:
Anelli, 25, who works as a journalist when she isn't overseeing the Leaky Cauldron, says that most abuse came from a small faction of vociferous fans. "They've lost the ability to divorce themselves between what J.K. Rowling is doing and what they'd like to see happen, and they've taken their disappointment and projected it onto her," she says. "I can totally understand how you could be upset if your preference didn't happen, but I can't understand or tolerate that people who claim to be her fans can be so mean to her."
Quote:
"I was surprised," says Spartz, 18, of the furious response. "But in hindsight, I shouldn't have been. I forgot how emotionally invested these 'shippers get. I knew they weren't going to be happy ... but I did not see it generating this much hate." He adds, "Romance in the books is the most prominent source of debate in the online fandom, where many of the fans border on obsessive, but casual readers will never understand what the big deal is."

Oh man, is this debate never gonna end? I guess I'm one of those casual reader's who doesn't understand what the big deal is, please, just let JKR write whatever she wants without biting her head off, and if you prefer something else, write a fanfic!

I understand the big deal (is a shipper) but I've seen websites where people are being nothing short of hateful toward Jo all because of a ship. It's pathetic and downright uncalled for. People should remember it is Jo writing these books, not us and it is up to her what she does with her characters and her storyline.
The debate should have ended though. It's made very clear at the end of HBP as to what's going to happen in book 7. The only real question mark over it all is whether those characters will live to continue the 'ships'.

Quite quite true. Quote:
"That woman has completely destroyed my faith in ever having a real relationship,"
Fortunately, there are very few women who share your idea lady. If everyone felt that way, the world would be divided in the masculine side, and the feminine with a big "We hate JK in between".
Personally I couldn't believe the way some shippers reacted when the course romance in HBP had taken was discovered. This is fiction people...

I am only glad we sem to have a more mature level of fans here than at other places because I have honestly not seen very much of this heated debate within our own forums.

Being a loyal Chocolater (H/G) I have had many debates on Snitch Seeker and all over the web, obviously I was rather over-joyed about the events in HBP. However, I would like to stand up for some H/Hr's. I am aware that many of them have used colourful language, other have resorted to character bashing (my poor Gin's got a few more hits) and even threats, but their are still good heartbroken H/Hr's out there. I sympathise with them, if H/Hr did happen then I would have been quite upset myself. I can't say I would hate JK for it, her work has brought me too much joy, but I defenetly don't think I would read with the same passion. I am not saying these books are purley shipping for me, but it is the icing on the top.

I am not saying these books are purley shipping for me, but it is the icing on the top. Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it. (Sorry for my bad behaviour btw... here's to the good times eh?) When the article said... "Competition has been especially fierce between the Harry/Hermione and Harry/Ginny camps, where devotees have spent years on various Web sites, forums and mailing lists arguing the plausibility of their chosen pairings. "The Half-Blood Prince" should have settled the matter when it matched Harry with Ginny and Hermione with Ron. Instead, it's caused an eruption of fannish dismay."
...I felt like raising my hand because I was so sure it would be H/Hr, and while of course I'm not going to bother arguing against a ship that is so clearly canon now, I still feel my support for H/Hr was justified. "Dismayed" is the perfect word, because IMO, H/G came completely out of the blue plot-wise.
And while I'm not going to start slandering JKR because things didn't go the way I would have liked, I did think she was out of line with her reaction the "deluded" comments. It would have been nice if she'd made more of an effort to defend us. I lost a lot of respect for her for that.
And so, with the conclusive end of H/Hr, allow me to raise a glass to the end of an era of my fandom...

Yeah. It was the miltants that Emerson was citicising. The type who are now bad-mouthing Jo Rowling because of it. Quote:

She did reprimand Emerson and say she wouldn't call them that. You can't blame her for laughing, it's an instinct. I don't think many of us could've sat there straight-faced. She merely said, 're-read the books' which is miles better than what she could've said.

But I got the impression that she totally agreed but didn't want to insult a big section of the fanbase outright.
I'll have to go back and reread; I do remember being slightly disgusted.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Fiona Renée Oliveraux | I have to say that, in my opinion, anyone who has carefully read the books could see that R/Hr was building up for years. It should come as no real surprise to devoted readers that they finally ended up being canon.
However, H/G? Not that I don't support it, but it did honestly come out of nowhere. If, perhaps, Harry had shown us some twinges of affection for Ginny in OotP, then it would have felt much more realistic to me, and less like a fanfic.
The whole romance business between Tonks and Lupin, I think that was out of nowhere as well. Its odd, isn't it, that all these relationships developed in HBP, and not before?
I don't know. I think we all over analyze these things, myself included.

| Minty Mouthwash I myself am a R/Hr shipper. I mean I think they make a good couple. In the HBP a lot of new couples did arrive. (I won't mention any for spoiler reasons.) However I do think that it is horrible that fans of J.K. can go and hate her now because she didn't use their ship. Like marcella_riddle said, it's her story. So if we don't like that, we have to deal with it. In an idealistic world we'd all be able to have things go our way. Unfortunately that'll probably never happen, but we can hope.
As for H/Hr fans, I can understand where they're coming from. I mean I think Harry and Hermione could be a good couple as well, but I think that from the beginning of the series there has always been that sign that it was going to be R/Hr, not H/Hr. This is just my opinion of course, but I don't think there is any reason to hate J.K. just because she used the Ron and Hermione ship instead of the Harry and Hermione ship.

OK, well lets just sit down and think for a moment. Yes both of those did come out of no where. But lets see, H/G, I am happy for this happining and I am not angry with how it happned. Yes I know im a H/G fan from the begining but remember feelings can come out of no where. Tell me that you never automaticly felt lust or more for someone that you have known for years or have just met out of the blue? I have. To me by her doing this it's making it more of a real life setting of romance and everything instead of a romance novel which this should not be.

Well, personally, I can't relate to all those H/Hr shippers, since I've been H/G since the beginning.
Nonetheless, the main focus of JKR's books isn't romance. If people can take such a small aspect of Harry Potter and chose to hate JK Rowling for it, then they obviously weren't fans of the book.

Please explain shippers to me I don't get it. All I get from it is angry people taking pot shots at people they don't know or understand.

I never really could relate to the H/HR shippers...I saw their relationship as a mother-son sorta thing you know?

I have all ways been and will always be a H/G shipper and R/Hr shipper. And I dont know, it would have been a little obvious if Hermione went with Harry. Because thats the way it is in every book. The leading lady going with the leading man. And come now, everyone knows JK isnt the usual writer. And please dont think Im bashing you H/Hr shippers. You guys had as much evidence of an attraction (even though I saw them more as a brother/sister thing...) as us R/Hr and H/G shippers. Jk, just decided on this path. And I have a feeling even after this series is over...this battle of shippers will still continue

| To Certain H/Hr Shippers... Good Lord, it isn't a big deal. First of all, get a life! Stop living through characters who don't actually exist. Then, try to understand the fact that you don't know, nor have you ever met, Harry or Ron or Hermione and so can't asume to know what they really want in a relationship.
The only person in the entire world that has personally met any characters in the Harry Potter world is Joe Rowling. She just writes about their lives--we hear about these characters through her, not from first-hand experience.
Stop acting like you know what's best for a character that you have only read about in books.
Honestly, if you are so upset, that's what fanfictions are for. "Fiction"--as in something that will never happen. A perfectly suiting catagory for H/Hr shippers. And I don't mean any disrespect by that. Really. |

If I'm perfectly honest, I don't understand H/Hr shioppers. From the beginning (even before I knew ships existed) I have always thought H/G and R/Hr. To me, H/Hr was a brother sister relationship. I do sympathise with them though, because they feel as strongly for their ship as I do about mine, and I know that if mine had not happened I would have been very disappointed as well. However, I think we must remember, this is NOT a romance novel. Although love is an integral part of the plot, it's more to do with the love between the trio IMO, not the various ships. JK is the author, and she can do what she likes really, it's her work, not ours. As for all this stuff about losing faith in having a real relationship - PLEASE! Get real...I know I'm an obsessed fan, I'll be the first to admit it, but to go so far as to say something like, all because of fictional characters? I'm sorry, that takes the biscuit. This is a book people, not real life (much as I wish it real...) You cannot seriously base your life on what happens in it. Some people just need to take a step back...
