| | | Harry Potter Teaches Love And Faith - HP Teaches Love And Faith Summary:
Though some people might have reservations because the “Harry Potter” books and films center around magic, wizards and mystery, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church’s Hary Potter-themed vacation Bible school. Article: The Times Record, Arkansas have an article about a vacation Bible school in which the main theme is using the Harry Potter books to teach love and faith and how to lead a responsible, religion-based lifestyle. Quote: Each child was given the opportunity to first “shop” for their Harry Potter glasses, wands and capes at the famous Diagon Alley before the class orientation. Quote: “And since Harry Potter had a little scar on his forehead, all of these kids get to have a little scar tattoo that’s removable,” said Sharon Herrick, director of the church’s Sunday School programs who dressed as Miss McGonnagall. Quote: “The whole theme and idea of this is to put kids out of their ordinary life and into a different existence,” she said. “All of these kids know ‘Harry Potter.’ I mean ‘Harry Potter’ is big time. We’re probably as excited about this as the kids are.” Click here for the full story.
thanks to both Wizard News & The Times Record, Arkansas for story. |

If they're not careful they could end up turning HP into a religion.

That's cute... in a rather creepy, cult-ish way.
I work at a library, and we have an entire book about the moral aspect of Harry Potter. No one ever checks it out. lol.

I wonder what the Anti-Potter Christians would say about this! Quote: I work at a library, and we have an entire book about the moral aspect of Harry Potter. No one ever checks it out. lol. I wouldn't mind having a little read of that! |

| Yeah finally a christian embrassing Harry Potter. She must have read the book instead of just deciding that all things Harry Potter are evil. I wish all the automatons would shut up and read the book then make an informed decision. I have said it before, my mother-in-law thought that the books were evil and then I asked her to read them and now she loves them. Dont let other people do your thinking!!

A Bible school Harry Potter theme? Now im not saying that I wouldn't go, cause I would. But I think Im too old.
I wonder what all those Anti-Harry Potter people will think about this. Wait let me guess.... the devil has told us all to start a Harry Potter religion so we can learn witch craft. People are so stupid. |

I don't think they'll let it go too far. I think it's nice what they're doing. It proves to all of those other people who think it turns kids AWAY from their religion that Harry Potter isn't bad and can teach them good things. I think all of those Ani-Harry Potter people haven't really read the books anyway. The just assume.....

It's good that they are incorporating moral themes from Harry Potter in their religious beliefs, because HP does teach moral beliefs and not just magic. I read a book not too long ago called The Spirituality of Potterworld by Francis Bridger, which defends the morality and goodness of the series.

It could become a cult thing if they're not careful, and that's bad, because then you don't really think for yourself - you're just blindly following it and believing all of it to be good and getting possessive and/or defensive and a lot of other unpleasant things - I'm a little wary of that.
On the other hand, if it is handled carefully, what these people are doing could be a smart thing - they're taking something that the kids are familiar with - a story and characters that the kids identify with and like, and using it to put forward ideas they want the kids to learn. ...er... depends on the way you put it, really. No - it's more like they're using familiar things as a tool for teaching. It's like Aesop's fables with morals, or Popeye saying it's good to eat Spinach.

Theres a place's where schools have actually band HP books because people think that there kids will start worshiping witchcraft and the devil and things like that. That is so dumb!
I'm happy theres a place where kids can go and learn the good things about the books and I think that it would be really fun to go to a place like that! |

I think its the people who are insecure about their faith that get so defensive. HP is a story-brilliant, yes-but its not a threat to anything. Hmmm, I'm kinda split, is this a good thing or not? I mean I think it's good c'os HP does teach good morals about love and truth, etc, but it could get out of hand. Like you've already said, it may start a creepy sort of cult....

yeah. i'd have to second the opinion that most people who think hp is a threat are insecure in their religion not to mention that almost all of them haven't even read the books.
i was once searching for something on the AM track and stumbled across a christian station. it's normally pretty ok , but that day they had a guest speaker on who was talking about how harry potter was turning people, epsecially prison inmates, into worshippers of the devil. she made all sorts of claims. one said that the use of harry's blood to bring back voldemort was an attack on Christ's crucifiction. excuse me?!?! she also said JK had clearly researched into witchcraft because of the creatures, spells and potions mention! ok. the creatures come from mythology from all over the world. almost all the spells are derived completely from latin. the potions? i'm pretty sure those have mythological basis too. blech. these people are embarrassing.
yeah. rant over. that's a cool idea, having a bible camp based on hp. i like that. my girl scout troop did that for our silver award.

Anyways, I think it's cute that they're doing that for the kids. I don't think it'll become like a cult, they just want the kids to have a little fun. Besides, it'll probably get some of the kids to read the books, which is always a good thing. |
