[img]http://www.snitchseeker.com/images/news/hp_grandpre_80.jpg' align='middle'> Harry Potter:Not just for kids - From the Convetion Alley in Canada Summary:
CBC News has a profile which focuses on Convention Alley, the for adults only Harry Potter symposium which took place over the weekend in Ontario, Canada. Article:
Thanks to TLC Quote: Overall, the conference's wide range of paper, panel and discussion topics – from "Severus Snape: Romantic Byronic Hero or Unredeemable 'Greasy Git'?" to "Harry's International Readers: Global Understanding or Culture Shock?" – reflects the broad background of the participants, who are primarily drawn from the internet chat group.
The article includes interviews with academics on the popularity of children's shows or books with adults, as well as an interview with Sheryll Townsend, one of Convention Alley's organizers.
When you read the first couple [Harry Potter books], you can understand why publishers classified them as children's literature," Townsend said. She adds, however, that since the 1997 debut of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the characters have matured with each new edition to the series, which has also become much darker, as Rowling promised from the beginning. "Order of the Phoenix – c'mon, that's not a book for kids." TLC |

Ya i have to admit one of the real reasons i read the Harry Potter books, aside from the awsome plots, is to see the development of the characters. I know a few people who said they didn't like the 5th book as much because Harry was "moody" but thats what all of us teens are, "were just a moody little sack of hormones", right? :online2long:

i agree, how the characters are growing is a huge part of the book and life, which is portrayed really well through these books

Of course the books are going to develop, because the children are. Thats what I feel has made this trilogy so successful, because it is something that people can develop and grow up with, and it makes great reading for adults too.

I agree too. I also like how the character's develope. I mean what did you expect? That they were going to stay the same 11 year old kids forever ? That's how teenager's are. We are moody.

i absolutely loved OoTP, it was so mind-blowing and sad. theyre kinda right, the books arent for "kids" but it depends on how old the "kids" are. cuz the books are thick and if kids are like 8-10 unless they were book worms like i was at that age, they wont stick to it. yeah the characters are developing and i love reading about them with each books--i've grown a heavy emotional attachment to all of the characters. but its part of what makes the book real! i mean, if the characters were all adults, like if harry was 25+ i doubt "kids" would read it but im not sure about adults. but i doubt the books would even be so popular if they were meant for only adults. (not bashing on the books, its just that kids tend to be more open-minded about magic and stuff) i dont think the stuff i wrote just made sense LOL

Sounds cool. I, too, would like to hear from someone who attended the convention. The debate on Snape sounds rather humerous to me. I'm caught between them, but find myself leaning more towards "greasy git". LoL |

Heh, all these discussions sound humerous. At least adults are reading Harry Potter! I hate it when they think it's just a kids book, because it's not. My mom only just started reading Harry Potter in June of this year, after I kept on telling her to read it. Maybe she ought to go to one of these things...But, sadly, she still doesn't remember enough things to go have a discussion.
