The British Film Institute has compiled a list of the 100 "Ultimate Films" based on UK Cinema admissions estimates.
The first two Harry Potter films made this list.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was ranked at number 11, with an estimated attendance of 17.56 million.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was ranked at number 24, with a estimated attendance 14.18 million.
The number one spot was given to the classic
Gone With the Wind, with an estimated attendance of 35 million.

Blockbusters Jaws (1976), Jurassic Park (1993) and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) all make the top 20 at 14, 15 and 16 respectively.

So, in other words, Harry Potter beat LotR in the amount of people who went to see the films in the UK.
