Default Harry Potter in Irish

The BBC has an article about the newest translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - the Irish version.

Quote:
The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, has been translated into Irish by Maire Nic Mhaolain, originally from County Down.

The book's publishers, Bloomsbury, have produced 25,000 copies and are waiting to see how it sells before translating the rest of the series.

Ms Nic Mhaolain said that translating JK Rowling's intrinsically English expressions to Irish was difficult.
Quote:
However, Ms Nic Mhaolain said she still encountered problems right from the start.

She said: "When I was doing the translation, the very first sentence took me ages because it said 'The Dursleys were perfectly normal, thank you very much'."

She said that the expression 'thank you very much' was not intended to mean what it normally would.

"I worked and worked at that sentence and then I said 'I'm still at the first sentence, help'. I went on, because I could have been stuck for ages," she said.
Quote:
Eleven-year-old Sean Behan said: "It's good to finally have an Irish book that someone can read."

Laura Duff, from the Gael Scoil, Maynooth , County Kildare, who was attending the event, said it was wonderful to have a contemporary and successful book to offer her pupils.

"I think it is a great idea," she said.

"It is something they all enjoy reading. They have all read it in English and a lot of them have the book in Irish and were following along when the author was reading."
Quote:
Now she has a favourite character, Hermione.

She said: "Harry, of course, is the central character but Hermione is a clever girl.

"I think she is a good role model. She would get up your nose at times, she is so bossy, but in the end she is a good friend."

Moo Spork? SPORKY SPORKY!!

How cool!! I know my store can order at least 5-10 HP books that are in different languages. I was tempted to get German, because I took a year of it in High School, but I haven't gotten around to it yet...

Tá 'Harry Potter agus an Órchloch' agam! Cheannaigh mé é an lá a tháinig sé amach. Ar dtús, bhí sé beaganín deacair ach tar éis an chéad caibidil, ní raibh fadhb ar bit agam. Tá an leabhair níos fhoide as Gaeilge, ach tá sé an-chósúil leis an scéal as Bearla. Tá níos mó focail i mo theanga dúchas, mar sin! Ach i ndáiríre, aon duine a bhfuil in ann Gaeilge a thuiscint; deán iarracht. Tá sé ar fheabhas a bheith abálta leabhar chomh iontach sin a léamh ins an dá teanga. Níl ach rud amháin ag cur as dom anios, agus sin le Snitchseeker. Cá bhfuil an áit speisialta don Gaeilge ins an 'Dept of International Co-operation'?!

Duine eile as Éire?! Go hiontach! Is cuma cé mhéad bhliain atá agat, tá tú in ann Gaeilge a scríobh! Sin an rud is tabhachtach, gan dabht.

… agus cad atá scríofa ar an dhroim:

An bhfaca tú na difríochtí?!

As beautiful as the Irish language is, you're not allowed to speak it in the main forums. However, thank you for showing us those pictures!!

As I was saying up above in the terribly confusing language I love, I just went off on a tangent because there's nowhere else to use it here. And that it's a pity my request to put an Irish section into the Dept of International Co-operation was ignored, turned down, etc.
And no worries about the pics, your uber welcome! (Fáilte!) They're pretty much the same, but 'Órchloch', if you're interested, means 'the stone that makes gold'. And the TRAEIN LUAIS bit is just 'Express'.

I read the first three books in Spanish and there is difference, and I think it would be terribly difficult to translate these books in any language in a way that other cultures could get the same effect as we read it in english. I respect all those who have translated the books in any language...its one tough job.

Wow, I never knew that language was Irish. It looked funny so at first I thought it was French, but I knew French doesn't look like that. And then I saw this word -"Gaelige", then I thought it could be Gaelic. Then it hit me- it was Irish. I've never seen or heard the Irish language before, so it was obvious I was guessing all the wrong things. It is incredible that you've got HP to read in your own language in Irish! I congratulate you!

It was ignored? Well that wont do, I'll look into it for you myself personally.

Thank you, there were actually a few other timid suggestions from Irish members too. I'd love to be able to ramble on in Irish somewhere here!

And thanks for the congrats, though I'm not sure I deserve them. I'm hardly dedicated to discovering the intricate workings of my language, I just speak it!
