Northern Star Online has a follow-up article about the Harry Potter books being used in Higher Education on reading lists for courses. Article: Harry Potter in Higher Education
An article found on Northern Star Online had the following article up about the Harry Potter books being used on courses in Higher Education. Quote: When Matt Birchler bought his textbooks at the beginning of the semester, he was surprised when he found his English books were from the Harry Potter series. "I had never read any of the books or seen the movies before this class," Birchler, a freshman communications major, said. "If I knew the class was using Harry Potter as a text, I probably would not have taken the class, but having actually read one of the books now, I have to say they're way better than I ever expected." Quote: Angela Schult, a freshman elementary education major, said she believes they are working at a college level. "Just because the books may be an easy read doesn't mean that they cannot benefit us," she said. "We were told at the beginning of the semester that reading anything makes us better writers, whether it's Shakespeare or a copy of the Enquirer." Quote: The class' teacher, Karley Adney, believes focusing on these books is useful because it exposes students to popular fiction, which is a type of writing that they may or many not have had the chance to read in a classroom setting. "It is valuable that students are exposed to all genres of writing because then they are able to make their own educated decisions about what constitutes good writing," Adney said. Adney chose the Harry Potter books because the series is packed with themes and issues she says we can all relate to. "There is classicism and racism, and other issues like loss, rejection, popularity, family and acceptance - all of which are issues that we have dealt with and still do deal with on a daily basis," Adney said. Quote: All books used are either from the series itself or deal with analyzing the Harry Potter books. Although the course has many educational goals, some students are looking forward to more than just grammar and writing. "I should say I want to become a better writer [in the class], but really, right now I just want to see what happens next in the Harry Potter story," Birchler said. Source: HP4U. |

That's a good point. I read a book that talked about Harry Potter from a minister and theologist's point of view, and they pretty much said that Harry Potter is mainly a book about a young boy's life, and the fact that he is a wizard is only secondary in importance in the book. So Harry Potter is not out to promote witchcraft or such, it's just there to tell a story, plain and simple.

Just so you know, I had to take that 2nd icon out. No swearing
And BTW, this isn't referring to 'Highschool' - that's not Higher Education. Higher Education is University/College.

| In Love with Touz | | Lil Mikky-Mu Harry Potter is a literary & social phenomenon, it's good to see that it's getting out there! People might be more inclined to take the HP series more seriously. It's definitely not just for children! Quote: agree!! Most of my friends/co-workers haven't taken the time to read HP because they have a pre-determination against them. Most people will read/watch/listen to/try things because of what their peers think. I always influence people to read HP because of how awesome the books are!! If I had classes in high school that required these books I might have actually graduated on time!! Very good point!... I find a lotof the lit used in schools turns people off from reading... this is something that could boost literacy numbers.

I wish they would assign it where I live. I'm three years away from college, but it would be nice if they offered it all the same. Imagine taking an entire course on HP? I could sleep through that class (not that I would) and I would still recieve full marks.

| FEE FII FOOO FONA!
I have a friend who did his English Thesis on Harry Potter.
Was either on the moralities explored in modern writing or on representations of magic in litriture through the ages. Must get it off him and have a read.
I knew I should have done English instead of science

| Arteest Extraordinaire awesome! I hope I get to study Harry Potter... I'd get all 100's!!! But I don't think that everyone should have to read it because what if people haven't even read the other 4 books??? It wouldn't make any sence to them. I think the people who are reading Harry Potter should actually want to read the book, not because they have to. |

| I wish that i could be given Harry Potter to read in English and you could do a piece of coursework on it also. That would be so cool and i could actually get a good grade in English. But oh no! We have to be doing crappy Romeo and Julliet where the class had to have a discussion with the teacher about Shakespeare and the 15th century. She asked us what did we associate with the 15th century and all she got back was Jack the Ripper and Mary Poppins! No, Harry Potter would be like so much better. |

Well i know that Jack the Ripper was later than that and of course Mary Poppins is fictional. But as i said my class suggested them, not me! So if they're pretty short on intelligance then i will succeed if we were given Harry Potter! Ha! Ha! Ha! I think they were suggested only to wind the teacher up anyway. |

I have a friend who had to read the first Harry Potter and write a 6 page analysis on it for summer work!
I spent hours online basically writing it for her, because she wasn't as big a fan as I was....

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cordelia Flynn First | Hey! I think that course would be AWESOME!!! I would totally get an A just from being able to quote the books by heart and know them so well that I wouldn't even have to study!!!! I'm a new freshman at my private high school and they (UNFORTUNATELY) would never assign a Harry Potter book. Wish I could write a paper on one though. I'd have a really easy time working out an essay from the thousand themes and stuff that I know without reference. This year we had to read Bless Me, Ultima (weird book) and Ellen Foster (depressing story of an abused child who wants to kill her dad) over the summer, and one of the course books for this year is Lord of the Flies! About shipwrecked children eating each other!!! Cannibalism! Harry Potter would be a MILLION times better! Quote: I'd get all 100's!!! But I don't think that everyone should have to read it because what if people haven't even read the other 4 books??? It wouldn't make any sence to them. I think the people who are reading Harry Potter should actually want to read the book, not because they have to. And I agree with u Margaret. It wouldn't make any sense to a new reader, although in English courses we read the books for the themes and stuff and the Order of Phoenix has a lot of themes that one doesn't need to know the whole story in order to understand.
