| | | Harry Potter helps kids learn Irish!
Thanks to Wizardnews for the link to this article! Quote:
Teachers across the country are delving into an Irish edition of a best-selling Harry Potter book to attract schoolchildren to the language, it has emerged.
Booksellers have reported high sales of Harry Potter Agus An Orchloch, JK Rowling’s international first best-seller, to schools and Irish communities abroad.

Muireann Ní Mhórain, of an Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (Council of Irish Education and Irish Schools), confirmed the “as Gaeilge” version had found its way into the classroom as a teaching aid.
“Teachers are always looking for current popular material in Irish as distinct from stuff that is outdated that they aren’t interested in,” she said.
“It is being used as a teaching aid for senior children in primary schools and junior classes in post-primary schools.
“It gives teachers an opportunity for jazzing up the language in the classroom.”

The council, which highlights Irish language teaching resources, informed schools about the book.
She said the publication of the book had been warmly welcomed throughout the education sector.
The translator, Máire Nic Mhaoláin, spent about nine months working her magic on the original Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone.
One of the owners of Kenny’s Bookshop in Galway, Tom Kenny, said sales of the Irish language edition had hit the high hundreds since it was launched there last month.

| That's amazing! HP is a great learning tool, bringing it into the classroom to learn a language is really impressive. My brother has read the books both in English and French. Maybe I should too! |

| I used to do Irish in years 8,9 and 10. I failed it every year like and I didnt take it at GCSE level cause I continued with French instead (suprisingly im better at that even though I'm also crap at it). I used to hate the teacher also. But this year my French teacher left and I ended up with the Irish teacher for French (cause she also teaches French). I just so hate her and Irish! |

| Yay!! Ta athas orm Harry Potter ag teacht amach i Gaeilge!!!! that means i'm so happy harry potter is coming out in irish!!! wel im Irish (obviously) nd im glad hp is coming out in irish cause it wil definatly help more kids learn it!! i suck at irish . ^^ dat was just easy stuff but i hav 2 do much MUCH harder stuff in my leaving cert exam, so im ****ed!!! still dead proud 2 be Irish!! (even tho i suck at da language nd hate learnin it!! haha) but there's only a certain percent that speak irish all the time in the whole of Ireland. they hav gaeltachts (Gaeltachts are irish schools you can go 2 in the summer and learn more irish. your not aloud speak a word of english cause if your caught u get kicked out nd after payin 300 euro 2 go, dat aint good!! but there's supossed 2 be only 1 or 2 classes of learnin a day, the rest you just hav a laugh nd play games nd stuff like dat. i've never been 2 one so i dont no wat else they do!) everybody else in Ireland just speaks english, but its our own sort of english, like the Aussie's hav der own english!! they speak english but not the same words nd stuff as the acctual english, ya get me!!? ok i'l shut up now!! just wanted 2 let ya no dat. |
