A Scottish Paper Has Branded Harry Potter anti-Christian Article: The following article was in the Highland News Paper from Inverness, Scotland this morning. Read it and see what you all think of it.
"Quote"
Harry Potter and his wizard chums are in for a religious roasting from an Inverness religious Christian group.
It is worried about the “Witch craft and Wizardry” contained in the best selling books and films.
It is to warn parents about the dangers of reading Harry Potter books at a special seminar held in the city this weekend.
But the publishers of the multi-million sellers by Scottish author J K Rowling have hit back at religious critics and claim the stories have a strong moral agenda.
The controversy is being stirred by the Christian Outreach Centre in Inverness which wants to highlight whether the bespectacled magician is a “Friend or Foe” to youngsters.
They do not go so far as to say the books represent devil worship or Satanism – but some aspects are viewed as “anti-Christian”.
The seminar will take place on Saturday at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Inverness.
Pastor Owen Morris said: “It is an important issue what our kids read. I think that some of the material in the Potter books and films is unsuitable. I think it is unfortunate that they are set amongst a backdrop of wizardry and witchcraft. Some aspects of some books seem to be written from an anti-Christian point of view.
We will express our concerns to parents from a Christian viewpoint.”
The seminar will also examine the world of fantasy literature, including the Harry Potter books, which have caused great controversy in Christian circles.
“However, we are not advocating censorship.”
The Harry Potter books will not be the only ones in for critical criticism.
The trilogy by Philip Pullman called His Dark Materials will also be under scrutiny.
Mr Morris continued: “We are not advocating that they be banned, we are just pointing out to parents that some of this type of literature might not be suitable from a Christian view point.”
“We want parents to be aware of the dangers of allowing their children to read these books.”
But Mr Morris stressed: “It is crucial that our children not only read but learn to enjoy reading. There is a wealth of good literature out there.”
His wife, Kate, added:” I don’t like the fact that these Harry Potter books are based on witchcraft.
“It can’t be suitable reading for our kids.”
The five Harry Potter books from the Philosophers stone to the Order Of The Phoenix have made author JK Rowling one of the richest women in the world
Lucy Chapman, children’s publicity manager for Bloomsbury Publishing, which publishes the Harry Potter books said, “We don’t really think Harry Potter books deserve criticism from religious groups, as the books have a strong moral agenda.
“Even though they are not overtly Christian, they do carry a strong sense of what’s right and wrong, honesty and loyalty.”
"End Quote" As someone who lives in Inverness I think that this is one of the most sill things I have read in the Highland News. I mean there is nothing anti-Christian about Harry Potter.

| I, for one, find this completely preposterous. This is just people ranting because they are jealous of JK.

| this seems to be one of the biggest contraversies (sp?) over this book and frankly I'm tired of it...As a christian I see nothing wrong with the Harry Potter books. It's not like they are pressuring kids into satanism....they teach them whats wrong and right through something they will enjoy reading about...These books are normally classified as reading for 12 to 13 year olds and I believe anyone that old can realise that Harry Potter is make believe and as long as the children understand that...there is nothing wrong with these books... |

I know a bunch of people who think Harry Potter is Anti-Christian. When they ask me why i like the Harry Potter Series, I say because i enjoy reading the series and it reminds me that there are people who have it worse than i do.
Children should read to inprove their Vocabulary, Right? I'd rather see them reading a book they enjoy reading then reading a book they are not enjoying.
I have a Good Point don't I? |

yea- I am a Christian and completely agree. My friend's mum won't let her read the books because of the evil in them. I feel sorry for her. As long as you realize they are fictional, I think they are fine!!! I agree that they teach life lessons. I don't think people should discriminate against the books because of their so called "anti-Christian" aspect. |

| I'm Christian and I'm not ashamed to say that I love Harry Potter. I'm in Forensics and I have a speech made up that give every meet about how I believe that books should not be censored just because they advocate new ideas into the world. I was shocked to find out that while I was doing my research Harry is also banned because of racism(mudbloods) and anti-family themes(the Dursleys). |

| oh for goodness sake.... i'm Christian and go to a Christian high school and attend chruch every week..... they honestly don't have a problem with HP... how is it "anti-Christian" when Harry is trying to save the wizarding world. I really don't see a problem because they aren't even 'worshipping' (sp?) satan, witchcraft and all that stuff.... |

| Omg! I hate when Christian people write this crap. I'm Catholic by the way...
Anyway...
Why do they think Harry Potter is out to get the Christians? I've never heard of a Jewish school or community holding meetings about Harry Potter because it is 'promoting anti-judaisn'.
Harry Potter is a book. Not a manual. People aren't supposed to read the books and then try to be wizards. They just read it and enjoy it's amazing themes like friendship, love, respect... and all that fun stuff.
I was on here one time and this really smart person said something like:
if a jewish author wrote a book about jewish children who went to a jewish school, learned their history and religion and had an all around good time, would we have this problem?
I'm not quoting.. that person said it much better...
but seriously! Everyone is going nuts over nothing!!!!! |

| I never saw Harry Potter as anti-religion and never will. It is just a fun book for goodness sake! You can be religious and like Harry Potter can't you? I'm Unitarian, and we can believe whatever we want... |

| Ok that's stupid i know the difference between the right and wrong and most people do. I hate the fact that people think this stuff if we weren't supposed to read and write this stuff would god have created J.K.Rowling to write this stuff??
But that's just me |
