We known that because Nick celebrates his deathday 500 years from 1492, which is 1992. Therefore Hermione, to have been 12 at that time, would have been born in 1980.
The characters and the books are absed through the years 1990-1998.

I always wanted them to be about the same age as me also but after re-reading CoS i was so disapointed that they werent. But i hopefully should still be 16 by the time 6th book comes out making me the same age as them in that book.
