Gary Oldman wont work for less than £1million - claims actress Samantha Morton

Summary:
Apparently a rift has been going on between the two actors; Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) and Samantha Morton.

Article:

Gary Oldman wont work for less than £1million

The Sunday Mirror today (12/09/04) ran an article concerning the on going 'rift' between Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) and Samantha Morton, a fellow actress. Here is what it had to say:

Quote:
Gary Oldman branded British Samantha Morton as 'ultra-stupid' and 'nutty' after she accused him of turning down a film role out of greed.

He hit the roof after the actress suggested he wanted at least £1million to appear in her low-budget film, River Queen.

A statement released by Gary's management says this: "The idiotic comments made by ultra-stupid actress Samantha Morton came to our attention a couple of days ago.

Gary, who was completely puzzled by these remarks and other weird claims about him by the nutty and well-known as 'difficult' actress, was very unhappy."

It went on to read that Gary had turned down the offer amongst others and had just simply chosen to reject it.

The rift began last month when Morton claimed: "He wont read anything we send him unless we offer him a million."

I dont really like the sound of the Samantha Morton woman... Why cant she mind her own business? I shudder to think what would happen if Gary Oldman refuses to act for Ootp.

I don't really think that she's that off base by saying this. If Gary was interested in the film, and then backed out because of money issues, then that shows what he's really into acting for. Lots of big name actors take pay cuts and sometimes even work for free to be in a film that they love... if Gary was so passionate about this movie, then he should have made it regardless of the money.

She is just breaking into Hollywood and the film probably needed someone like gary to make it a sure sucess and when he refused she was obviously upset!!
Do you even know who she is? She's a terrifically talented actress who's been around for a long time, she was even nominated for an Oscar this year. You can't say she's just breaking into Hollywood just because you don't know who she is.

I know she was nominated for an oscar (didn't win it) , and i am not saying she isn't talented but to my knowledge she hasn't had many lead roles and i haven't seen her in any big films. what i was trying to say is that she probably felt that she needed a well know actor to ensure the sucess of the movie and make her into one of hollywoods leading ladies and get some big leads

I'm more inclined to believe Ms. Morton on this issue. Oldman's agency used some very kindergarten tactics, who says 'ultra-stupid,' ummm, I think I did when I was six. They were just trying to undermine her argument by attacking her directly, rather than commenting on her statement, which they didn't really address, accept to say that Gary was shocked and appalled.

yeah i agree with that i don't think that was very professional to release such a statment but nor is it professional for her to say that (if she did who knows?)

Well for one thing if i were him i wouldnt want to work on a movie for less than a million dollars anyways. I mean that is just like a Doctor, they dont do a heart surgery and charge different prices for different people you know. you are paying for the expertise and their name and talent, i mean if you could do it urself you would have done so not called them to do it you know what i mean

i mean Gary has been in this busy for more than a decade. he has done movies, theater and the like honing his craft and perfecting it, and if i were doing something that long and making movies that do gross in the 100 of millions of dollars i would be asking for that to, that is if he is going to be in those kinds of movies

now if he is doing indie films and the like i doubt they will have the budget for that

and you would be surprised that alot of movies do pay their actors a million dollars, or pounds to be in it. Cameron Diaz got a million for staring in Charlies Angels. A million is chump change when compared to the 20 million Will Smith got for Ali or the 25 Tom Hanks for for CastAway.

I mean a million sounds like alot to us bcuz we arent used to thinking in those figures, but to movie execs who deal in the billions of dollars paying a actor a million for a movie that grosses over 100 million is music to their ears, bcuz thats more money they get to pocket.

but all in all that chick sounds like a someone who got their feelings hurt and has no other outlet for the anger than gossip and lies

Maybe she's just bitter 'cos she couldn't get Gary Oldman to be in her film.

Samantha Morton sounds like a real upsetting person... I am sure Gary had a point in not wanting to do the film... You can't make someone do something they don't want to do...
I like your politeness - Real upsetting person.... hehe - cute. I think Gary would like to call her other things though. :whisle:

I think she had no right at all in stating something like that, even if it is true, it's none of her business at the end of the day...

other than that he obviously just wasn't intrested. this is his career and he can luckly choose what films he wants to appear in.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

The management for Gary acted totally unprofessionally by just calling her names rather than addressing the issue.

Her accusation isn't that scandulous; as Tomasina pointed out £1million is a mere paypacket compared to ALOT of Hollywood bigshots.

Saying he wouldn't work because of the wage isn't an unfair statement. Calling her 'nutty' and 'ultra-stupid', when it isn't even relevant, is.

I'd like Gary Oldman to comment for himself on the matter.

Keeper of Mr Tennant's specs

Ia gree with you Emma the site all this comes from looks like a total joke i mean it is so unporofesional.

but i have seen Samanthat Mortan interviewd and she is really jellious of other Brittish actors who are doing well in the USA and all over the world. she has been nomintaed for and oscar 2-3 times and still not many people know who she is..

either way Gary Oldman is a GREAT actor and he deserves to make at leask 1 million a picture i mean some terrible actors *Cough JLo Cough* get way more than that

I really don't know what to believe from all this...

She could be telling the truth for all we know...

or

It could be a publicity stunt...

Theres no real way of knowing unless Gary Oldman comments himself...

Honestly, I think that if he chooses to not work for less than a million, then it's between him and his agent (or maybe just him). As it's been said before, a million is NOT that much. It doesn't sound like he was interested in the movie and changed his mind for more cash. Though it may seem unprofessional for the PR people to have called this morton person (never heard of her until today) "ultra stupid" they could have just been at a loss for words. I know everyone has said stuff that isn't diplomatic, but more out of surprise. Then there's always the chance of misrepresentation, could have meant that what she SAID was ultra stupid and not her, it's all in a matter of who wrote it and what they want to portray. She wasn't ver professional in coming out and TELLING people that he wouldn't work for less than a million either. She would know that that kind of cash seems like a lot to us, but for actors it's basically a pay cut, a pretty big one, and almost a donation of their time. but, obviously, many people just go "A MILLION DOLLARS/POUNDS/EUROS (what ever)" and freak out.

And if it was just a publicity stunt, look how well it worked. I've never heard of her, and I know lots of other people haven't, but since she bad mouthed a Harry Potter movie actor, she's got her name on tons of harry potter sites, hp fans now know of her and may look for her in movies or whatever, whether or not they'll go is still a toss up, but she got her name out there.
