While promoting his upcoming film The Dark Knight, actor Gary Oldman spoke about his character Lieutenant James Gordon and how similar it was to his portrayal of Sirius Black in Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and Order of the Phoenix: Quote: In the comics and in many of the movies, Gordon’s role is in many respects expositional. He talks to Batman, he tells Batman what’s going on and Batman goes and does his thing. How do you approach scenes that are expositional?
They’re very hard. It’s very hard to make exposition sound like someone talking. It’s the hardest thing to do and I had a whole morning of it [in the bank vault]. I just do it and hope it’s okay!
I have done the three “Harry Potter” films. It’s the same kind of thing. You breathe a sigh of relief when you actually get something that’s got some kind of emotional connection. Most of the stuff you speak is plot. So yeah, like the comic, [Gordon’s] very much here [the bank vault].

Gary was exceptional as Sirius (it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role) and his role in Batman while limited (exposititional!) has been great too!

although being a long time Gary Oldman fan, i was initially skeptical of him playing Gordon-- Gordon was supposed to be a father figure to Bruce Wayne after his parents were murdered-- and Oldman i thought was too young and didnt have the look. although i still wish Gordon was slightly older (he comes off as a big brother than a father figure), i so totally take back what i said about the look. first time i saw a picture of Oldman as Gordon, i had like lock jaw or something, i couldnt believe the comic book version was now a living, breathing entity in the movies

I see what he means. In Goblet of Fire his role was entirely expositional, and although there was an emotional connection in Order of the Phoenix, he still had to do a lot of 'info dumping'.

LOL i think thats what he's basically gonna do on The Dark Knight too, except that he gets some action scenes specially towards the end.

yeah he really dont get to do much ''acting'' as such, its just plot gumpf, spitting out plot and not getting to be the amazing and deep character in the books....
