| | | Further coverage on the HBP scandal
Yesterday we reported that copies of ' Half-Blood Prince' had been involved in a theft and shooting incident. Since then more information has come to light.
Interestingly, two tabloid newspapers have claimed responsibility for unvieling the scandal; both The Daily Mirror AND The Sun claim to have had reporters and photographers who met up with Aarron Lambert. He tried to sell copies of the book to them for £30,000 - £50,000. Both newspapers claimed they were meeting up with the man with the intention of returning the novel to the publishers.
The Mirror today printed a statement from Bloomsbury, thanking them for their involvement; Quote:
A spokesman said: "We would like to thank the Daily Mirror and Northamptonshire police for their help in recovering the books. We hope nobody will spoil the excitement for all Harry Potter fans who are looking forward to reading the new book."
And The Guardian printed a statement from the Northamptonshire Police, who also thanked The Daily Mirror; Quote:
Chief Supt Dean Smith of Northamptonshire police paid tribute to the Mirror for reporting the incident last night:
"The Daily Mirror has behaved exceptionally honourably in bringing about the arrest of these people. It is as a result of information supplied by the Daily Mirror that we've made these arrests."
"Armed officers were deployed after we were told by the Mirror that suspected weapons were seen by its journalists."
J.K.Rowling was granted a court injunction against the two men to prevent the book's contents from being released. Quote:
Legal firm Reynolds Porter Chamberlain issued a statement on her behalf which said: “This order was made following our client’s discovery this morning that a copy of the forthcoming Harry Potter Book, Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, had been obtained by unauthorised persons who had subsequently offered the book to newspaper journalists.”
Quote:
A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “We have charged a 37-year-old Kettering man with possession of an offensive weapon and with handling stolen property and a 19-year-old with theft and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
“Both have been released on bail.”
The Times also has an article which includes eye-witness details from a reporter from The Sun. Quote:
John Askill, a reporter for The Sun, described his experience: the shot was fired over his head as he tried to make off with a copy of the novel without handing over a £50,000 “fee” for the stolen goods.
Quote:
“I looked down the barrel of a gun — and thought I was about to die for the sake of Harry Potter,” John Askill writes in The Sun today. “For two horrific minutes I pleaded with the gunman not to shoot. Then he fired over my shoulder and into the air. I headed straight for my car and drove off, still shaking, leaving the two men with Harry Potter’s secrets.”

LOL This all sounds so far fetched it's almost hilarious.
Reporter #1: We weren't stealing! We were uncovering a scandle.
Reporter #2: Of course! We're good tabloid reporters.

Mind you, The Sun did return a copy of OotP to Bloomsbury, the one that was found in a field prior to that release. Maybe they were being honest. And uncovering a scandal like a stolen HP book is enough of an exclusive alone without printing book details.

Yes, I'm sure they had the best of intentions!
Did JKR have a court order against them last time like she did get this time?

The injunction was against the two men, according to the article (in case they'd read bits of it, most likely) but I'm sure that stretches to whomever uses the text as evidence for the case.
I just think if they were uncharacteristically honest before, it could happen again.

Oh in some weird way this makes me even more excited about HBP...But I find it disturbing that people would have guns just because they want to sell HBP...Shows how serious HP is - this is not just for kids!

This seems a little bit too dramatic to me, like the little kid who never gets attention and then when he does makes a big scene and exploits things more

I remember hearing it on the radio this morning. and I put it off because they were speculating about who was going to die and I thought it was about the spoiler thing from some time ago. and then my parents told me it was about a stolen hbp print... why are all those thieves so good? they nearly released hbp before release date! I don't want that to happen that'd be a huge spolier!

I think they have ulterior motives. LOL *cough*Fame*cough* I mean, isn't it just a little bit of an odd coincidence that they recover a stolen OotP book last year and this year they're recovering a stolen HBP book? LOL

wow, sounds like The Sun is up to a bit of trouble to me. I don't believe there are any news people out there trying to recover stolen things "Just" to protect the secrets within the book.

I just noticed this, but you know, TLC commented on the same thing. LOL They mentioned how it sounds so Rita Skeeter-ish. And it really does!
